A friend asked me to find out, I personally think it's not true and only a human relating concept! Anyone out there know for sure? scientific proof? Cos if that is true then cats have kittens aged 6 and upwards. Would be glad for any replies. Thanks

Dogs and cats hearts beat roughly 7 times faster than humans do. Their organs also work faster than humans do, the smaller the species, the shorter the lifespan because of the rapid wear on the organs. The concept of 7 to 1 in "dog years" is a layman's way of saying it. They age roughly seven times faster than humans do.

It's how they age, so for 1 human year a cat or dog would be the equivalent of 7 human years, thats why they don't live as long as we do.

Typically speaking they do say that 7-1 human years they scientists have to have something to go by and that is the way they do it dogs usually have a life span of 12-14 yrs of age which would make them how old?? so thats how the scientists do it they basically go upon human years for that for ex: a dog that is 10yrs old human he would be 70 yrs old if you tracked dogs or cats by the real age they are 1-2-3 yrs of age thats pretty young to die if you go by that age. So the scientist compare it to human years that makes more sense to them and as it does to us...

It's just a thing people say to make it seem like their pets live longer. A year is a year - the time it takes the earth to revolve around the sun. Cats and dogs have faster metabolisms than larger animals like people do, and as such lead shorter faster lives. Mice, rats, small monkeys etc lead even shorter faster lives. Most mammals have a similar number of heart beats over their lifetime and as such longevity is dependant on metabolism.

It is just a human relating concept. Its basically because they dont live as long as humans and each of their years is 7 human years equivalent.

I believe it is because of the size of the animals bodily organ systems. As for the 1 human to 7 dog years - it is a little more complicated than that - there is a table you can look at that tells you the exact/equivilant age of the animal - compared to us - eg, the first twelve months of a dogs life compares differently to say the 5th year of his life - one of my dogs is 11 - so he equals 96 dog years - my other dog is 7.5 - so dog years he is 46 - my youngest dog is 3 - he equals 17 dog years.

They don't.People say that to try and make it sound like their pets have the same length of life as humans do in some way.
