i'm making a video in imovie and want to use the blue-screen/green-screen technique, but i don't have one. i do have big red screens though, do those work the same way?

Yes and no.

no because they can also be green - in which case they are called green screens or any other colour. of course if you are talking semantics then by definition a 'blue screeen' would have to be blue.

the screens are effectivley a block of single colour behind the main action. the single colour is replaced during the editing process by a pre-recorded sequence.

Essentially, yes. But it depends what you are filming. Blue is normally used for people because human skin has very little blue color to it.
