I had a root canal done last year. It hasn't given me very much trouble, but now the tooth hurts as much as before the RC. I had it done by an endo and a very good one at that. Is there a chance it went bad after a year?

There is always a chance that a root canal can fail; having an extra or auxillary canal that might have been missed, not reaching the apex leaving some tissue to reinfect, occluding on the tooth too hard, perio problems, or for some unknown reason. You said "it hasn't given me very much trouble" which leads me to believe that you've had "some" that should have been checked. Sometimes this can be cleared up with a round of antibiotics or just an adjustment of the bite. You will need to see the dentist to have it evaluated since there is nothing over the counter that will cure the problem without knowing what is causing it. Try taking some Advil or Motrin 600 mg to help ease the pain and inflammation for now until you can get in, but don't put this off too long. I've seen patients do just what your doing, waiting for it to heal itself when it's an untreated reoccurring abscess that destroys the surrounding bone and causes the loss of the tooth. See your dentist for it to be evaluated with an x ray before you become one of them. Hope I've been of some help and I do hope you won't procrastinate for too much longer. Good luck!

Crowns that don't fit tightly around the gum can let in bacteria into the tooth below them. This in turn causes cavities.

It's important to have the dentist take xrays and do an exam to determine the cause of the pain.

This did happen to me after a root canal and crown in one tooth.

I am afraid you have got root of your teeth infected. Cause may be not proper dressing after opening the root of your teeth, may no proper plugging of the canal made by dentist. But generally it is first i have written. This time ask the doc to dress the root and use temporary plug. Get your root dressed in this way for at least 5 times keeping a gap of one day or after 48 hrs wait after dressing if the foul smell is not their in the swab taken out of canal. I could not understand "endo" but the doc who performs this is a orthodontics.

there are many reasons for that :1- a canal may be missed during the initial therapy . 2-under filling of one or all the canals of the specified tooth.in either case it will lead to an abscess , treated by either re-doing the root canal fillng or extaction of the tooth with aproper antibiotic administration.

this has happened to me several times. i developed an abcess under the root canal area. i would call the dentist asap and get some exrays. you may need some antibiotics and a bridge.
i know, i was pretty upset because of the enormous expense. i vowed no more root canals for me.

Well it sounds like the crown may have came off, just take a trip to the dentist and have it looked at.

not really , probably something new in the same area. Get a dentist to check it out.
