Many things can contribute including...obesity, diabetes, some long term prescribed drugs, high blood pressure, family history, even some races are more prone to it than others.
I have kidney failure too and have found the site below very useful for general and dietary advice.

Like any thing it has many causes.
Eliminate the cause and you have touch down.
Failure means, beyond repair in most cases, replace or just remove the one and try to live on one. Dialysis may be an alternative. Can use a machine or they have bags that can be changed very 4 to 6 hours.
If lucky some recover by using machine but it is not an usual occurrence.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

If you talk of diseases then it is mostly due bacterial or viral infection. However, if you talk of kidney problems then it could arise out of several physiological, genetical and other reasons.
