I am 16 and I want to pursue a racing career.

But I dont know if i have the funding to start it. How can i go about doing this?

Do go-kart racing leagues require you to own your own kart to race in it? or will the provide one?

Any advice at all would help.

PS: I live in seattle area, and I am signed up for newsletters from Grand Prix Raceways, a go-karting establishment in Tacoma, and recently got a newsletter saying "The NW Indoor Karting Championships will return to GPR on Sunday, April 1st. We will have more fabulous prizes and a 200cc Pro class with a $500 purse for the top three drivers."

And "For Kart Racers there will be a pre-season Kart Prep seminar on February 21st at 7:00PM hosted by Dave Lehmann and 2006 Rotax Max National Champion Mike Rolison. Contact Dave at GPR for a flyer."

Boy, have you been getting some lousy answers here. Karting is an absolute blast! And a great family sport.

You can get a good used kart for around $2400 give or take. Add about $500 for the necessary safety gear (suit, helmet, gloves, neck brace). Sounds like you are looking in the wrong places for your info, so here's some sites to get you pointed in the right direction:

www.tsracing.com lists kart tracks by state, and has some excellent info for the new karter.

www.ekartingnews.com Again, great "newbie" info and very very active forum where you can get tons of info from karters themselves.

www.worldkarting.com

Find the track(s) nearest you, and visit them. Talk to the karters. All you have to say is "I'm thinking about getting into karting" and you'll get more help and info than you know what to do with. Karters are great people. We got started in it a couple years ago and it's the most fun I've ever had. And yes, there is risk involved. As there is in any motor sport. But my experience has been that serious injuries are very rare. Safety is #1 in our sport.

Good luck and have fun!

I've raced both carts and car and I can honestly tell you that you can race cars cheaper than you can race carts and the cars are definitely safer .. at least in my opinion . I broke my arm while racing carts and since Ive been dirt track racing I've had a couple of bad wrecks and haven't been hurt yet . racing is expensive and takes most if not all of your time and effort . go to www.racingjunk.com and take a look at some if the prices of things in there .. it might be helpful to be able to compare some of the prices on different things. good luck and keep looking . if you want it bad enough you'll figure out how to find a ride

i was just like you when i was young & did get to race a little (no money ) i loved it.but life goes on. go to any track you can find be it kart, stock, etc. hang out offer to pit or what ever. most stock tracks (dirt) have junker races, let it be known what you want to do & you will get your chance.what does your folks say about this ,it helps if you have thier support.i love racing always have for years every sat would fine me at the track.the last few yrs i have not gone a lot,but now my grandauter wants to drive,so here we go. don't leave God out of it. he makes dreams come true even if theres no way.stay in church & pray.thru God all things are posabill while i didn't go pro (full time) god gave me my dreams (every one of them) had a great time, good luck son, you'll make it. may God bless you

IN MOST RACING SERIES YOU NEED TO BUY YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT. MY SUGGESTION TO YOU IS TO GET A JOB AND SAVE ALL OF YOUR MONEY. IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE. THE LAST YEAR THAT I RACED I SPENT ABOUT $10,000.00 TO FINISH 8TH IN POINTS AT OUR LOCAL TRACK. THE GUY WHO WON OUR DIVISION SPENT CLOSE TO $30,000.00 THE MONEY YOU GET FROM WINNING WILL NEVER COVER YOUR EXPENSES FOR WEEK TO WEEK OPERATION. SPONSOR MONEY GOES SO FAR. YOU SAID THAT CARTING 250 PRO CLASS PAYS $500 TO WIN A PRO CART PROBABLY COSTS BETWEEN 2-3 THOUSAND DOLLARS.
