Honda's ASIMO is an actual robot, reported to cost just short of $1 million each.

For more information, see the ASIMO article at wikipedia.com

It's a real robot, not seen in the 'flesh' yet but cant wait to.

If anyone is interested it uses geared limbs moved by servo motors, which provide highly accurate control (by feedback from an encoder - rotary position sensor) of the angular position of the joints, and thus the orientation of the limbs.

Unfortunately human like as it seems it is currently only able to replicate movements fed into it by its programmers, and therefore fulfills the main requirements of ISO 8373, which states that a robot is:

"An automatically controlled, reprogrammable, multipurpose, manipulator programmable in three or more axes, which may be either fixed in place or mobile for use in industrial automation applications"

Or is this just a bit too much detail......sorry.

Ha, ok, you had fun with the question and I'll have fun with the answer. Yes, she is indeed a real person. She also makes a career out of stealing from anyone and everyone she can, without giving them credit, and has comparatively little in the way of totally original produced content. Despite being a real person she also seems to have faked a pregnancy and birth of a child. Her preggo belly was seen bunching and folding (as a pad would) multiple times, and she happily jumped in and out of cars with ease (and without assistance) while supposedly 9 months pregnant. Any mother would tell you that 9/10 times this is impossible to do. Bottom line: She is a real person, but is fake through and through

It's a real robot, and have very advanced features that allow it to mimic human movements - it has a sense of balance, for example. But it is no where near as 'artificially intelligent' as the TV ad implies! A lot of those scenes were obviously set up and pre-programmed, to create the illusion that it was genuinely exploring a museum on it's own and exhibiting curiosity. We're not there yet!

It's a real robot and the product of millions of dollars in R&D. See also the Sony QRIO robot which was sadly discontinued last year.

Its fully automated, there is nobody inside, the fact that it is programmed to act so 'human' does fool a lot of people. It also has the ability to learn and apply this to new tasks and challenges. It's quite probably the most advanced machine ever devised, an amazing piece of kit.
I can't wait to get one to go to work for me, and then come home to wipe my butt!
