Because that is what they have been told to think, just like everything else.

Most Christians d not assume that Atheists are immoral or lack intelligence. I am a Christian and I think to make a statement like that would be foolish.
Now to ask you a question, If evolution as put forth in Darwinism is true and fact, while following that theory, I can see a intellectual reason to abhor crime and murder, intellectually it is not very humane. What I cannot see is where "morals" would have anything to do with it. Survival of the fittest would include the removal of those not as fit to survive. Where then would there be any moral obligation to save those who are weak, disabled, or sick?

You could have asked the same question in a less confrontational way, but here goes:

Because some Christians believe that people are basically evil, and that without the threat of an eternity in Hell to keep them in line, people will revert to the most depraved behaviour imaginable.

Some people cannot grasp the idea that athiests do not need either the celestial stick (Hell) or the cosmic carrot (Heaven) of the afterlife to lead moral and decent lives in this world.

Maybe because they think that without God, or religion, one cannot have morals. But I do not think such things. It is not realistic to do so. Most of the Atheists that I have known have even more morals than do Christians. And when an Atheist does a good deed they do it simply out of the kindness of their hearts, not to earn points with God. (And I do not mean that all Christians do this....only the ones who claim to be...they are the worst kind).

I'm a Christian and I don't assume that.
I think it is terrible any religion would; many people who were not raised Atheist were exposed to religion or spirituality.
If not, morals and ethics are all around us and can be learned by anyone open enough to be moral and ethical.

I'm a Christian and There are many very moral, caring, ethical, and sincere people who don't know God. I'm not debating what people are in this world. I'm more concerned with what happens to them after they have gone. I want to give them the information they need to get to heaven if they so chose.

Like the religion, it is blindly followed by a few fanatics that those of non-religious (and even to some of differing religions) that they are superior to us in all aspects of morality. As they are so blinded they can not see the world as it is but instead the have a warped version of life controlled by the necessity to 'prove' themselves, to their peers, a true Christian.

Because the bible tells us that if you are not with God, you are against God? I am married to a man who is not a believer. (yet) He is a good man and I know God loves him. I hope that he will see the truth before he dies, but if he doesn't, I know that I won't miss him in heaven. There is no sadness there. I concentrate on teaching my children what I know about God, so that they can make their own choice between good and evil. Best wishes.
