My son has a 11month old cat/kitten who has been going out for about 8 hours a day. Recently he has been coming back badly scratched and roughed up, so we have kept him in for about 4 days while he heals.
Unfortunately he has started urinating and defecating in places other than his litter tray, and also being sick occasionally on the carpet.
I imagine this is because he can't go out, can anyone help on this problem please?

Well if all else fails you can get a crate that is large enough for the cat, a food and water dish, a small towel (bed), and a litter box. This actually going to be a good size crate but you can get them. BUT make sure his litter box is clean with fresh litter. NOT just the top layer but right to the bottom. You might want to just dump it all and start fresh. If you have other pets this cat may not use the box because they do. In this case you may need a box just for him. But you may want to also get him checked at the vet to make sure he is OK. You mention scratches and him being sick occasionally. This being as you don't know or at least say what he got into a fight with. Was it another cat, dog, or a wild animal where he managed to escape. Hope I helped you out a little. Good Luck.

I see from some of the previous answers that the kids have got hold of the computers today! However, I would suggest restricting him to the room where the litter tray is for a while. If you can put a little of his faeces and/or urine in the litter that will give it the right smell and he should start to use it. If not, you may have to just spread newspaper on the floor until he can go out again. I hope he soon feels better. If he keeps getting into fights you might be wise to consider having him neutered.

I think that your cat needs to be seen by the vet. I don't want to worry you too much but it sounds to me that he may have caught an infection either from the adversary or just from the open wounds. This is assuming that the cat has never shown this sort of behaviour before. Cats are usually clean creatures and don't urinate or defecate just anywhere and the vomiting is really worrying.

Please, get the cat seen as soon as possible - and make sure that your son is extra careful with his hygiene after handling the cat.

Well for now you might want to invest in two litter boxes if you have a large home. Also don't use any cleaning products with ammonia in them, this can actually attract the cat back to the same spot to go again. If he is not fixed, then that is the big problem, some male cats have this urgent urge to mark their territory. Get him fixed as soon as you can.

Here's how to deal with the cat mess:

- Get a litter box
- remove any solid material from the soiled area and dispose of in a scented nappy bag
- wash with a sponge and carpet cleaner like 'Vanish' (sold in UK).
- Use a common household disinfectant like 'Detol' to disinfect the area.
- use vanish again to remove any stains.

Good luck!

I agree with Frodette Baggins. Cats usually only have 'accidents' if they are quite ill. I would get him to a vet. Neutering would be kind to the cat as well. Best wishes.

Take the cat/kitten to the vet, the vet will love to help you and your cat out.

He might be on heat. Has he had any needles lately, it could be a reaction to that. I would personally say heat though from teh symptoms you described. Wait a few weeks and if I doesnt improve then take him to the vet to get fixed
