If my memory serves me correctly, Muhammad was born into a tribe that believed in a Abrahamic religion that was different then both Judaism and Christianity. They believed in the one God of Abraham, and that they were the descendants of Ishmael but fell into idolatry. Muhammad came along and fixed this, and presented himself as the final prophet of Allah (the one true got of Abraham). The first two being Moses and Jesus.
Oh yeah, but, like some other people said. He didn't really believe in God and the Idols like his tribe. Until he was visited by Gabriel, who dictated the Qur'an for him.
He definetly wasn't a Christian though.

Mohammed did not follow any religion, he believed that those around him were not on the right path, he used to spend so many long hours in a cave called Hira meditating and thinking of the world surrounding him until he got the message of Islam through Gabriel
and it is wrong to say that Mohammed founded Islam he did not, he spread a message..God founded Islam..
Peace be with you

He believed in the religion of Abraham who wasn't Jewish or Christian but knew there was only one true God. That dispite living in an area where people had 360 god, one for each day of the week.
Islam means to submit to God will. So it covers all those be it Jews, Christians etc who submit to God. While the other religions take the name of the prophet or region they began Islam is the TRUE religion as it accepts all prophets like Moses, David, Adam etc as from God

Actually he was different from all other people around him since his birth. He had never broken his promises, never lied to anyone and never prayed to Idols.
And till the revelation made to him by Allah through angel Gabriel he was the follower of his forefather Ibrahim (ala Milata Ibrahim) and believed in one Allah "God". He was monotheist.
And yes he did not found the religion. It was revealed to him.
One other point Mohammad was not the first to whom Islam was revealed. From Adam onwards all religions are called Islam. "Islam" means both peace (Salama) and submission (Tasleem). All the religions before Mohammad stressed on the point of submission to one Allah "God" as our creator. So as a fact all of them can be called Islam and Muslims consider them as that.
Then you will ask why we don’t call Christians or Jews Muslims or followers of Islam. Well it’s because they broke their pact.
Jews and Christians were asked by their prophets to follow the one that follows them. But they did not keep their promise with their prophets. They went against the orders given to them thus they are non believers even by their own religion. As the Holly Quran quotes Christ as saying: After me their will be the last prophet his name is Ahmad (Mohammad's second name since birth). (The wording of the translation is mine)
May Allah guide us all the righious path

He wasn't in any religion. He used to meditate and think about God. Probably Agnostic in modern terms, but I'm not sure. He was Monotheistic for sure.

he didn't follow the pagans, neither behave like them by going to bars or drinking. he searched for God. the first signs was true dreams come to him, everytime he dream of something it comes true the next day/days. so he went to a cave called "Hera" alone, he sets there thinking of the universe and God. he was believing in the oness of God.
