Gandalf the grey is fearful at times! It seems he does not realise the full extent of his glory until he faces the Balrog in the caves of Moria. Now, I am not requesting you to read ' Fellowship of the Rings '. The first in the trilogy of LOTR. However I can't decide whether it is just a change of dress or a deeper spiritual transformation!

Deeper spiritual transformation.

Yeah they changed...
Gandalf The White is like a good version of Saruman, basically what Saruman was supposed to be... (i'm sorry but I still don't know how to spell his name...)

Gandalf the Gray was more kind and was so nice. While for the White, he was more firm, commanding and strict. It was only around the end when Gandalf the White showed a very soft side...

But I think it was just that Gandalf was determined to kill of Sauron, so in my opinion he was the SAME person and it was only just a boost in istari rank... only that he knew he had more power and he was more determined...

We're led to believe that Gandalf's defeat of the Balrog was a test for his promotion to head of the council, timely since the spot was held by the unworthy white wizard at Isengard.

Gandalf's story mimicks a kind of messiah experience. When he faces the Balrog, he kills him--but he also dies. He dies but rises again, "sent back...until my task is done." That was a spiritual transformation. That was really when he became The White.

Since Saruman wasn't the white wizard anymore, Gandalf got promoted while he was down there.

I think grey is more of his dark side, while in white he is "pure" hence the color change.

I've pondered that very same question and cannot decide.
