It's not true that a pirated windows will not update.
But it's true that one can't download from microsoft if windows is pirated.
Also there is a tool released by microsoft to detect pirated copies of windows called windows genuine advantage.

go to microsoft.com and download any free software provided by microsoft.com. if it doesnot allow u to download it,then ur window operating system is pirated, else ur window operating system is not pirated.

try at www.microsoft.com/genuine u will know wether it is geneuine or pirated or else try downloading any file from microsoft.com which has a star mark, if u can download without any problem then it is genuine otherwise it is pirated.

you come to know it when link your self to www.micorsoft.com and enter the system key the web may find it whether your cpoy is pirated or not?!!!!
