heartworm disease is spread by mosquito's. So anywhere there are mosquito's dogs are at risk. It gets passed when a mosquito bites an infected dog, the disease gets passed to mosquito, then the mosquito can infect the next dogs it bites. I have seen dogs get heart worms. If the dog doesn't get treatment it will die. And if you catch it soon, the treatment is very costly, and hard on the dog. It is best to keep your dog on heartworm prevention. I live in Michigan in the U.S. and heartworm prevention is recommended year-round here because our temperatures are so weird, mosquito's can be around in the middle of December. You can talk to your veterinarian, they can tell you more about it, and give you some hand outs. They will also tell you if your dog needs to be on heartworm prevention year round, or for only part of the year.

How in the world can you live in The Land Down Under and not know if they have a lot of mosquitoes? Good Grief! And yes all dogs are very supseptable to getting heartworms that is why all dogs need to be on heartworm preventative after getting a blood test to make sure that they don't have them. I don't think that it matters where you live, but I suggest that you get off the computer and on the phone and call a vet and ask the heartworm question and then get your dog into see him.

Anywhere that has mosquitoes a dog is prone to heartworms. Ticks cause Lymes disese. A monthly pill can take care of both.

A dog can get it everywhere but, it is more likely in warmer climates. If you lived in the North Pole I would say dont worry about it. Australia is known for its bugs, snakes and its probably a good idea to have the dog tested and treated monthly.

You live somewhere....and don't know if there are mosquitoes? I'm not touchin' THAT one with a ten foot pole, I've had my fill and no room for dessert, BUT yes you're dog is at risk and should be protected.
