What is really scary is Teenagers TEXTING while driving. Horrifying actually. You know that they cannot be looking at the road, and they are speeding at the same time. Why not just put your eyeliner on or pick up a book off of the floor. I almost totalled a car going 5 miles an hour on the highway because I looked down for a moment and ran into a tandem. For everyone who says it's not a problem, ask yourself if it acutally HELPS you be a better driver. Driving a car is like carrying a loaded gun and we all must be responsible.

My opinion is that in many situations for many people it is quite safe to drive with a mobile in hand. Driving, once experienced at it, is not particularly difficult - you don't need to be a rocket scientist to do it safely.
What is driving?
It is steering the car between the pavement and the centre line of the road - easy.
It is keeping a distance behind the car in front so that if it stops suddenly you won't drive into it - easy.
It is slowing down when passing parked cars, drunk pedestrians, children, and junctions where you can't see or can't be seen - easy.
If you keep to the above three rules then you can drive in a planned manner, not a reacting-to-problems manner. So driving becomes a doddle, and doing it with one hand on the wheel and a phone in the other does not make it any more difficult.
What are we going to ban next? Turning on the car radio? smoking a cigarette, or changing gear, because they all involve taking a hand off the wheel.

I dont know, this really irritates me.
The worst offenders are those who obviosly have money, but wont pay £20 for a bloody bluetooth headset.
If I see people using their mobile while driving, I make sure I beep my horn loudly and frighten them, serves the silly sods right!
What is so urgent it cannot wait 2 minutes for them to pull over.
My sister got away with it recently, the officers reasoning being that it would create too much paperwork to fine her and that a good telling off would do. It hasnt stopped her though.

I would think it is because the likelyhood of being caught is minimal. The Police cannot be everywhere. Generally, I would say, the types of people that would do this, in a way that would endanger others and themselves, are not the type that abide by the law anyway.

Habbits, whether good or bad are very hard to break. Even after getting asthma and having to use an inhaler everyday why do I still smoke? I know i'm slowly killing myself, yet I still light up.
Were in an age now that we have to do everything "NOW". We have to take advantage of every second of our day, and try to fill in as much as possible. Cell phones help us do that. And since most ppl are on the road a large portion of the day, it really only makes sense that they are still using them.

Last year in Dorset some drivers had their tyres slashed and a note stuck on their windscreen saying why (yes, you've guessed it!). Amazingly the local media were sympathetic to the victims. I'm ashamed to say it but I punched the air and cheered!

I must admit this is one thing that REALLY infuriates me. I don't think anyone should think they are above the law. It annoys me more when you see someone wiggling all over the road and not indicating and then you pass them and actually see they are on the phone yabbering and laughing away as if the are the only person on the road! Namely mostly van drivers!
GRRRRRRRR I am all angry now!!!

I answered a similar question yesterday. The punishment for it and for drink driving, should fit the crime. A life long ban should fix it.
