Ground and pureed hominy corn.
Hominy has large, whitish, bumpy kernels and tastes very different from yellow (sweet) corn.
The grits are cooked like porridge and usually served with butter, salt and pepper. They can also be packed into a loaf pan and chilled, then sliced and pan fried (this is known as "cornmeal mush").
Also, you can eat the hominy as you would eat canned corn as a side dish, but I have never been a fan.
You can buy instant grits in the US, but I've only ever had home made so I cannot attest to how good or bad they are.

Hi!
Grits are coarsely ground hulled corn that is boiled and eaten hot with butter, especially at breakfast by people in the southern United States. Some people like to add milk and sugar or some other flavor like cinnamon. It is prepared and eaten much like oatmeal.
I don't like the taste, but many people do...
Grits can also mean grain that has had its husks removed or been coarsely ground. This would be like 'cream of wheat', which is also prepared and served (eaten) much like grits and oatmeal.
Best Wishes...
T.
