Depending on where you live you can get Royal Canin Labrador Junior breed specific premium pet food. This can only be purchased at a pet/produce store not at a supermarket. Any pet food bought at a supermarket is not premium, and will cause diarrhoea (plus you have to feed about 4 x as much!). This food is designed especially for labs, which have a tendency to scoff (the vacuum cleaners of the dog world!), put on weight and have a unique "duck down" type coat. I feed all my pets (one 7 mth pup, 3 cats) on a premium food and have never had any diarrhoea since feeding this food.
Keep in mind that you need to gradually introduce any new food you try as this can upset the gut flora in your pup, which will cause diarrhoea and vomiting. So, as a general rule, you should gradually change from your original food to your new food over about a week (eg day 1 start with 3/4 orig. food, 1/4 new). Dont switch and change foods - this will upset the stomach; once you have found a good food stick to it! Your dog doesn't need variety as long as he is enjoying the food supplied (remember if you had to clean yourself you wouldn't care if your food is beef flavour or lamb!)
At 4 mths, your pup should be fed about 3-4 times a day, remembering that you need to divide the daily food recommendation by the amount of times feeding (eg if the recommended feeding guide states one cup per day, then you need to feed 1/4 cup each feed if feeding 4 times). You may find that feeding smaller amounts more often throughout the day may also help. Just ensure that any food you chose, it MUST MUST MUST be a formula developed for pups, and for a lab this should be fed until about 12-15 months old, which you can then put onto an adult maintenance diet. If you feed your pup just an adult diet, your pup will not develop properly and will have health issues later in life as they will not get the appropriate levels of calcium or potassium which are required for developing bones.
Remember that your pup will always want food; dogs don't know when they are full (they don't have the "off" switch as cats do) so it is essential that you regulate the amount of food your pup eats. Avoid rich foods, such as liver treats until the stools are normal, and watch the treats you give your pup - if you offer a bone you need to reduce the amount you feed at the next meal - this will also help with the diarrhoea.
If this does not work, vets usually recommend a "bland" diet until the stools become firm again, so boiled chicken (no bones) will help until the stools are firm, which you can then feed a premium food. If your pup has diarrhoea after a week of this, then you need to take him/her to a vet - it may be something else.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Having been in the pet Ford game for well over 15 years, my advice would be as follows:

Your 4 month old pup will need between three and four meals a day.

If the toilet is soft it might be a sign of over feeding.

When feeding a dry food there are many types, please choose a very good quality,, premium brand, Nutro, Techni-Cal, Hills, etc.

Take advise from your local pet shop and do not over feed or if feeding treats with the food, please reduce the amount of food you are feeding.

Tins generally are no good 70 to 80% Moisture (water).

Do not us food that are bulked out with cereal, by products, sugars or E numbers.

Good Luck.

Firstly are you using puppy food rather than adult? And how soft is the poo - watery or just soft? I know with my pup until about 5mths was on and off having soft poos. It could be the intense worming when they're young. I have always found that by giving them rice and either chicken or scrambled egg for a few day is a good way to bind them stomaches and its so bland it doesn't irritate them - (only give one or two eggs depending on its size).

First you get him checked over by your vet to see if he may ave worms and just to make sure he is healthy If you changed his food SUDDENLY and started him on another brand without gradually getting him off the first one this coulld be the reason whenever changing a pup or even a dog from one brand to another you should ALWAYS gradually ease them into another kind try to give him some GATORADE in his water for the time being until you can get him into a vet to be checked for that you don't want your pup to end up dehydrated and end up having one problem on top of another problem mix the GATORADE in with his water 3/4 water to 1/4 GATORADE this is very very safe and it will keep your little one from dehydration BEST OF LUCK

Try another type of high-quality food. Temporarily, you can add a little bit of canned pumpkin (sugar free of course), this is something natural that hardens the stool. Keep trying foods, but know that it takes time for the system to adjust and soft poo is not necessarily bad, just inconvenient. Feed several times a day.

Cut down on the amount you are feeding over feeding always causes a loose stool. The amounts suggested on the bag of dog food is only a guideline or suggestion and should not be taken literally. Activity level as well as the dog's metabolism should be taken into account, you should only feed the amount that works for your dog.
