Rather than go to a cheaper restaurant why not look for a half decent place that has a special offer on? www.toptable.co.uk has a great list of special offers- some with 50% off!

If you like Japanese food, I would recommend "Wagamama"...good food, fast service and reasonable prices, although as you sit on huge tables next to complete strangers (which adds to the fun), it may not be suitable for a romantic dinner. There are a few branches in central London.

Slightly more expensive but definitely worth it, is the oldest French restaurant in London "Mon Plaisir" in Monmouth Street. Great food and ambiance to transport you to France.

For me the best value place of all is Diwana Bhel Poori, which serves Indian vegetarian food. I have been going for 20 years, and the snacks e.g. bhel poori, aloo papri chat etc are genuinely good, while the samosas are superb. Despite this it is very hard to spend £10 a head. No licence, but you can bring drinks in (there is an off licence two doors down).
A review and contact details are on my web site below.
If you are looking for something more conventional then there are lots of ideas on my site.

In the Crypt under St Martin in the Fields at Trafalgar Square. Good and plentiful hot typically English food. Not the most romantic of locations but it does have atmosphere and you can try your hand at brass rubbing there too. Reasonable prices and really delicious home made dishes.

The down and out soup kitchen on London docks is good. The food is warm and depending what night you go you might get an extra roll, and even a a blanket.

It relies upon on your funds! for much less costly sushi - Kulu Kulu's a solid decision yet with a smaller menu; I continually finally end up happy via fact they have my fave comfortable shelled crab hand roll. curiously their diverse tempura's very solid; i've got by no potential tried it however! there's a sushi buffet - a fixed amout of tempura/chicken/and so on... and all-you-can-devour quantities of a limited menu of salmon sashimi, salmon sushi, salmon epidermis sushi, tuna mayo sushi and a few different issues. that's approximately £15 in line with man or woman all in all and that's a solid in case you love sushi and characteristic a raving apetite. that's close to the theatre exhibiting Spamalot and that's have been given a television video demonstrate interior the front window that shows how busy the eating place is - maximum seating's interior the basement! do no longer likely like Yo Sushi.
