Sonya is a variation of Sophia, the Greek word for wisdom. It is an international name, used by Christians, Muslims and Hindus. It is a trendy name. It is also popular here in Pakistan. It is easy to say and remember. it is short and does not need a diminutive form. It is a nice name.

Not at all. It is a diminutive of the Russian name Sophia (СонÑ) and is in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Roumanian use, as well as being popular among English speaking people. A couple I knew (Indian/British) who wanted to find international names for their children chose Sonya for their daughter's name because it was also used in India. Sonya has two great advantages as a name. Everyone can pronounce it and there are no real shortened forms of it.

Its a common Russian name for girls.
Moreover, we(Russian) often call "sonya" those people, who love to sleep, or sleep too many hours because "sonya" has the same root as the word "son", which means "dream".

No, I don't think that it is a strange name at all. Moreover, it is so popular and wide spread ( especially in Slavic countries, including Russia) that it's accepted like "frequently met, nice female small name".
In Russian,Bulgarian, Macedonian written looks like that СонÑ, in Greek is Σονια (though it's not typical Greek name).
Have a great day!
