My sister is getting married this Spring in an outdoor, garden wedding. Being a very traditional family, we wanted the guests to throw rice as the newly wedded couple exit the garden. We were told that we could not throw rice but had to use rose petals or bird seed.

What in the world is wrong with throwing rice? It has been done for hundreds of years.

Claim: Rice thrown to wish newly-wedded couples well can kill their fine feathered friends.

Status: False.

Many churchs and reception halls have rules prohibiting the throwing of confetti or rice. These rules work to keep the property clean so that the next happy couple doesn't get its send-off amid the leavings of the previous pair. Confetti is notoriously hard to clean up; not even vacuuming a lawn will return the grass to its pristine condition.

Also, they say that it's helpful so that PEOPLE don't slip and fall on it :)

Sorry (((((Frog))))) - but that's a myth. Exploding birds is a myth started by extremists who blame humans for all ills of the world. If, in fact, birds were to explode by eating rice, militaries around the world would be feeding birds rice and using them as live hand grenades to lob at their enemies Many birds eat rice. The tradition of throwing bird seed started mostly because women wear slippy high heels to their weddings....and when they step on the rice, a lot of them end up slipping and falling. Oh and to answer your question - stop trying to override our culture with yours, OK?

The birds are unable to digest the rice and many of them get very ill and die. Therefore they suggest the bird seed, so you're feeding them, rose petals are a bit more romantic and some people I've seen even use bubbles.

as far as i know rice simbolyses fertility....so throwing rice to the newly wed couple means that you wish them healthy children.
i saw that other people said that it kills birds....i don't really know....but if it does that why is practiced in many conutries?and that means that hundreds of years birds died at every marriage ceremony?there are thousands of people that die of hunger but i don't think that they die because we throw a fistfull of rice at a wedding.

yep, it's the birds......if you must throw things at the newly wedded couple....use bird seed; how about getting everyone a little bell instead and ring them as the come out of the garden....

Kills birds and makes a big mess. Get over it and throw bird seed, it works the same.

Birds eat it and they can't digest it so they die. Unless your sister wants dead birds flopping down on her wedding, stick to something else. Try having the guests blow bubbles, it's really pretty.

Rice hurts birds....
If you go to your local craft store, or orientaltrading.com, they have special rice(more expensive however) that is fine for animals. Congrats!
