The only time he barks or growls is if someone knocks on our door. I've been trying for 3 years. He has learned a lot of other tricks but the one I want him to do the most. That might be why, I want it too bad and he knows it. My friend, who has his sister, taught her. She even tried to help.

You teach a dog to "speak" the same way you teach him any other trick. Some dogs are easier than others, but you just give the command, entice them to demonstrate the desired behavior, and reward it. My pit-bull Tater's natural....shall we say "self confidence" (lol) made teaching her to "talk to me" very easy. She would originally bark or softly growl (playfully) when I would wait to give her a treat. She was already performing the deisred behavior, all I had to do was conform it to my conditions, and viola! Tater learned to "talk to me" and at the same time, learned that unless she's told to, vocalizing doesn't get her jack-squat! Try giving him the speak command, then doing something that will get him to bark (like knocking on the door or having a friend knock on the door) then reward him, and tell him "good speak!" Eventually he will get the idea that "speak" means bark and not "someone's here" and will begin to understand what you want.

you need to get a clicker and when the dog barks at the door cliock on that ever time and say speak and give him a treat. he will learn that after a little while that when you say speak it means he can bark.. try and find a book on clicker training.

I taught mine to speak. I just kept saying a word like "ruff" and then say "speak." Eventually she would give one bark when ever I said speak. It took some repetition and some time.

The dogs vocal composition is not that complex as the humans. So you cant teach him how to speak.
