The veil has been a symbol of reverence to God in a number of religions when women wear it, so why when a muslim female wears one is it seen as a sign of oppression?

In Christianity women are instructed to wear a veil or head cover when entering a holy place and hindu, jewish women wear the veil.

It's just a shame that muslim women are having to have thier faith questioned just because they wish to follow Gods instructions.

Long live the veil.

You are quite correct in stating that many religions, including Judaism, Christianity and Islam, require women to wear some sort of head covering. In fact, in the early twentieth century and previous centuries, most women in Europe did cover their heads. It is a bizarre anachronism for Christians to criticize Muslims for using the veil, especially when similar teachings exist in the Bible.

"Godless" below was referring to the oppressive regime in Saudi Arabia, which does not represent the true teachings of Islam, which are that Jews and Christians can be free to practice their religions and their buildings should not be touched. Many of the extreme forms of the veil, such as burkas and other total-body coverings originate in local traditions, rather than Islam.

Perhaps it's because fourteen teenaged girls were burned to death, and 50 injured, in Mecca - because they weren't wearing the traditional headdress and firefighters were told by the police, not to get them out of the building for that reason. I believe that makes that particular rule oppressive.
