I am just wondering what it is that's so great that makes all the beatings etc. worth while?

I'm actually glad that Chap said what he did, because even those it is completely ridiculous it really does show the need for education in matters of rape. Muslim women have to cover up because Muslim men have no control. An interesting paper was published that showed men selected submissive women for exploitation. But of course it doesn't matter how a woman dresses nobody should be raped. I could see a woman wearing next to nothing and I wouldn't rape her cos I know rape is wrong. It doesn't help when people like to give justifications for it.

i am an atheist and by putting that gratuitous beating remark in the question it kind of got away from what i had intended to ask at first. But it also turned this question into another interesting area. And yes, not all muslim men actually follow the guidelines of the koran and beat the women. Although of course if there was a justification for beating, the muslim man wouldn't have to look very far.

Razan I'm not sure that what you say is the correct reason for it. I think that you may be seeing what you want it to be from deluded eyes. When you think about how men were in the 7th century. Although that is an imperical issue and evidence is needed for my claim. A muslim scholar told me that it was because a man was looking at an uncovered woman and walked into a wall and from then on men made the women cover up. But the only way we can resolve our points is by evidence. If your evidence shows you are right then I will change my mind and agree with you. But just ask yourself would you do the same if I proved mine?

babyyocca i kinda suppected that the reason would be to join allah in paradise and live forever. It just shows that you can get people to do anything or put up with anything in this life if you feed them silly nonsense about a loving afterlife. After all most people are scared of death.

Wel these kind of muslim women are open fields for the terrorists and the sort like taliban. i assume most of them are those living in Europe, not in Afghanistan or other truely Islamic countries.

Yes, women are tortured mentally and physically, here in the name of Islam. Here those arguing in favour of hijab,If they feel free in hijab, they should live in prisons there they will get more protection and no staring from males.

Muslims males burn girl schools. They don;t allow women job. They(these women in this forum) have not seen a real Islamic society, they have just learnt arguements from books. in muslim society, they are not allowed to argue, they are supposed to accept only,if they are "modest".

more more ... my heart burns...
all muslim women, if you can't help us relieve these humuliations, at least don;t be a agent to the forces of darkness.

When people take out a verse from the Quran that serves their purpose, which is "distortion of Islam", and never care to mention what God told us to care about females: wives and mothers, only shows evilness. Why didn’t tell us why the beating is for? Didn’t you see “As for those from whom ye fear rebellion” in the same verse?? Any person who goes out of line, must be punished, in all walks of life. Since the husband is responsible for providing (financially) for the wife (even if she is richer) plus protecting her…ect., he has the right to beat her when she commits adultery. He cannot beat her when he feels like it. If you hear of a man doing so just to show off muscle, don’t blame Islam for it. We have bad Muslims who interpret the Quran as they please.
Wearing the head scarf and all-covering garments does not make us less than others. We are protected from men’s prying eyes and their non-stop lust after women in short/tights clothes.
No matter what you say, I will not have another religion than the one I am born with.

Let me make one thing clear, beating is a universal thing.. and that beating is prohibited..nyway that's another subject in Islam I get:
1- I am recognized as a complete whole person equal to man and a partner
2-I am equal to man in bearing personal and common responsibilities and receiving the same reward.
3- I am equal to man in seeking knowledge and education
4- I am entitled to freedom of expression
5- Historical records show that women participated in public life with the early Muslims especially in the times of emergencies, women used to go to wars nursing warriors and such
6- Islam grants women equal rights to contract, enterprise,to earn and posses independently. My life, my property, my Honor are as sacred as those to men. My penalty if I committed an offense is the same as man's
7- Islam does not tolerate those who discriminate against women
8- I have a share of inheritance
9-We enjoy special privileges that men are deprived from: We are exempted from prayer and fasting when we go through period and at time of confinement, we don't have to go the weekly congregation of Friday prayer, we are exempted from financial liabilities, and as a mother I enjoy more recognition and higher Honor in the sight of God.
10- the Hijab, allows men to see us for our mind rather than our beauty and protects us..

the problem nowadays that women in Islam do not know their rights therefore they're lost and women are used and abused..
and men strayed from religion
therefore a lot of Muslim women are being abused under the name of Islam where men use verse and Hadith out of context..

See, in Islam men are supposed to always take care of us no matter who they are, if a daughter there's the father, if a sister there's the brother, as a wife there's a husband and if there's no one then the head of state is supposed to take care of her and pay her money to survive or provide her a job..

Peace be with you..a really good question!

I am a muslim lady and i m proud of being a muslim and i m soo happy that i was born in a muslim family !!

Yes i have read that verse and i understand it too , but you need to get some understanding about it for sure !! Its less violent than many verses in Bible for women...

I m best treated at my home, and m honored for being a part of my family, and even outside i m treated with respect ! and thats what our muslim community actualy is ! not the kind which is projected to you on media.......our males whether they are father, brother or husband keep us the best way .......and i m proud of them all !

Somewhere in some part of the world women are not treated good but thats cultural not religious....and in those parts even hindus and christains treat their wives the way ignorant muslim treat.....you can generalise it to whole muslim community or to the muslim community "Only"

Answering on behalf of a muslim friend she says that the love of God is shown in Islam and they are respected as an equal human rather than being portrayed as a sex object that is so wide spread in good Christian countries where it seems unless a woman is virtually walking around naked she is seen as oppressed.

Islam rules OK

"makes all the beatings etc. worth while"...Women are not beated or hurt in any way. U make it seam that in the arab world where most Muslim women wear a veil they are oppressed...but what u fail to recognize is that those women CHOOSES to wear the veil. Let me ask u a question, In the west where women wear practicly nothing, is it worth the risk of getting Raped? many people complain about rapists, but what they dont realize is that it is because those women wore so little that they were raped.

You are so wrong in your ideas. I am studying Islam and married to a Muslim man. I am treated like a queen, NEVER beaten. Your ideas are seriously misguided and you are spreading nothing but hatred. Research Islam if you want to have an INTELLIGENT conversation.

what do other cultures bring for a woman? sleeping with a man for money? walking in streets with attractive clothes?
in the world which girls are being abused motionally and sexually, or they are being prevented from their rights (like working as a man without equal salary), and you call GOD that are women really for others to have fun? their comes an idea of hejab which gives this chance to a woman to feel as free as a man, as strong as a man. to feel that she has an independent and valuable personality.
