If you've had experience with the WMA was it positive and is it worth lookinginto as a step up from regular SCA Rapier?

bushido, I am still working on the details of your trip, I might give you a stopover in seattle ( WMA) It involves rapier and longsword fighting stles i.e. cappo ferro that aren't used as much anymore and its not a fun and games training.

SCA rapier, unfortunately, too often deals still with epee blades, which are nowehere near the way an actual rapier should handle. The heavy rapier and cut-and-thrust styles are far more realistic. Also, a good many of the rapier community think in an Olympic fashion, which leads them to be willing to take a wound in order to get the kill.

Anywho, I am a Western Martial Artist. I study rapier, but these days I focus primarily on the german longsword. The group I train with plays full-on, at speed, with aluminium replicas that match the weaight and balance of the real thing but offer a nice fat edge that is quite safe to spar with. And yes, we spar at speed with minimal pulling of hte blows, just enough to avoid breaking bones.

The longsword is a wonderful weapon to learn, both quick and graceful but also extremely efficient and extremely brutal in its use. If anything, it's a style that requires perfect timing and distance, as well as exquisite footwork in order to stay safe, for in this style your sword is also your shield and every striek is also a defense, and every parry and be an attack or the source of your counterattack.

Make no mistake, the german longsword, even if held in two hands, is in no way a weapon for the brute, nor does it weight a ton (Albion and Angus Trim longswords weight in at roughly 3 pounds). It is a weapon that requires skill and practice to use effectively, and it's one that I personally love to use.

I've had some small experience with WMA. Definitely worth it, no question. If nothing else, the entirely different character to it will give a good foundation for exposing some of the commonly-unnoticed assumptions bound up in whatever eastern MA training you may have.
