From the Qur'an, Ali translation, verse 4:34
"Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because God has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what God would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For God is Most High, great (above you all)."

So if my wife is disobedient to me, according to the Qur'an, I should:
1. admonish her;
2. kick her out of bed; and
3. beat her.

Eight answers so far and it appears that I can beat her with a miswak or a broom. This is getting interesting.

Well, "Islam" means "submission" so perhaps that is how Muslim men make their women submit...

Digger,

Every culture that includes males in their numbers practices domestic violence. By that, I mean that wherever you find men, there will be a certain amount of that. It's not necessary, though. There is no way to know whether a relationship will be a good one or not. Therefore, once it becomes clear that one will not work, people should be allowed to dissolve it. Sociey has ways of discouraging that, so then those types of difficulties occur.

In other words, you're better off in no relationship than in a bad one (even if there are children because they are affected too). That is my opinion and logic anyway but I'm sure some would disagree.

Immature men, regardless of religion and culture, regretfully practice violence in their families, especially to their wives and daughters. Warnings, complaints, accusations made by international agencies did not bring good results. Perhaps, we need a longer time under an intellectual and spiritual education, beginning with each individual among all mankind. Each one of us should learn how to cease not only this primitive act, but also teach our children about the proper attitude to our brothers and sisters in a civilized world.

It's my opinion, based upon what I see in the media and my travels as a soldier in Iraq, that all Muslim people are pushed towards violence for all matters of dispute. There are sufficient numbers of them (both men and women) that will cut out your heart or cut off your head to make their point, all in the name of Allah!

Before I went to Iraq, I had great respect for the Muslim religion. But afterwards, I have none. In my opinion, the entire religion should be banned from the face of the earth. It's done nothing but cause problems throughout the world.

Do you know how the hitting is?? You get a miswak which is a thin plant used for the teeth.. you brush it on the wife... that's the hitting that the Quran is speaking of.. that's how Mohammed interpreted it..and we get our interpretation from the Sunna i.e. Mohammed (PBUH)'s words..
Please understand that that is the last resort if the wife is not obeying her husband in obeying God..
First the husband preaches his woman
Second if that does not work the man either leaves the bed but not the house or just give her his back or have sex with her with no passion.. then if all of that does not work you "hit" her with the miswak..

ahhh

I like how a lot of the people defending the passage are really only digging themselves deeper in the hole. Who cares if women disobey their husbands? They're adults! They shouldn't have to do something just because their husband tells them to. I find it sick when people talk about women like they're children who need to be coddled, protected and sheltered like children. We are just as intelligent and capable as men. It is simply society, some much more than others, that imposes these rules upon women that don't allow them to reach their full potential.

If some man told me he was going to do anything to me because I didn't "obey" him, be it preach to be, kick me out of bed, beat me, or brush my skin with a little toothbrush he'd be in for a rude awakening.

No !!!

Btw this is not violence......Slight beating means beating with a broom and its far better to get the lady correct regarding her loyality towards her husbands and home than letting her do more......Islam believe in fair relationship , ther should be no mixing in it to make it filthy...........if your wife cheat on you what would you do? if you would shower roses on her for that we won't mind ........but our males realy don't let this kind of attitude which is totally agaisnt ethics of life. When a kids gets wrong, his father slap him to get him back to the right not becuase the father is violent or he hates his kid but simply becuase he loves his kid and want him be on right always ! and thats wht a good husband want his wife to be !

Btw there is same kind of pusnishment in OT for disloyal wives!

But for today so now muslim males don't beat their wives.......they just get separated !which is kind of disaster for their kids.....But what else can they do?

Sure, if all Christians and Jews burn everything that comes into contact with a woman who's having her period, including a man's privates if he happens to have sex with her at that time. That's what the Old Testament says to do. It's right there in Deuteronomy or Numbers...can't remember which...but it's in one of those angry Moses law books right around the part that Fundies always drag out of context in order to denounce gays.

No! There are a lot of muslims in the world that are not that fundamental. We only see the burka wearing families. There are lots of muslim women that dress how they want and are independant not under the thumb of any man. They still practice their religeon and there are practicing men who support and love them. You will find this in places like Palestine and West Africa and we usually look at Saudi Arabia and Somalia.

For those who choose to follow the Qur'an, yes they do because they believe that this is the right thing to do. The movie with I believe it was Sally Fields where she portrayed an American woman who her husband got her to go to his country with him is an excellent portrayal of life for a woman in those countries. I would advise you to buy the book "Unveiling Islam' for a look at such as this. It is written by 2 brothers who grew up in Islam.
