In response to your other two answerers....what a jerk ...the first idiot....people can get dentures at any age necesssary!!! and for reasons such as car wreck that destroy someones whole mouth....very much a jerk.....and congratulations on your bravery to join the army.....Good Luck. Now, the second answerer...she tried to help but the modern equipment doesn't have aything to do with how you may heal as an individual....each person is different....and heals at their own pace.....it also greatly depends on how well you follow all after surgery care instructions. Call the dentist with ANY question afterwards....they can't know what you may experience that you might develop, so they're not going to give you every scenario of what to expect....so call them if any discomfort arises and see what they say to do for it....I'll just say I'm experienced . -or am currently experiencing this same ordeal. I am 33, and had a car wreck...I lost almost all of my upper teeth, and the lower ones were going to be lost from the trauma of the wreck in a few years, so I have been getting the process taken care of for about 7 months now....5 teeth pulled, then 6 more, then when the dentures arrived just last week, I went in for the last 12 to be pulled. It's been a out two weeks, and Trust me, I don't think you can plan on her timeline....one week to heal.....and 3 weeks for the teeth to return .....does she mean NEW ones? I'm not sure....but, whatever......I will say you might know I've heard 2 months to COMPLETELY heal back to normal...and get adjusted to wearing dentures. They are a differet experiece. but, I had NO choice. I will admit I miss my real teeth....But, Hey you gotta do what you gotta do...if that's your need. I am , at 2 weeks, tapered completly off the ibuprofen and Vicodens, and am startig to taper off on most of the rinses they instructed me to do-peroxide mixed with mouthwash, and a prescription oral rinse to help heal...but still am using salt water rinses to help speed healing.....I had to get on fever blister meds due to all the stress on my mouth....they busted out in 3 spots....and I have to rinse with Boric acid to help toughen up my gums because the dentures were rubbing and causing mouth ulcers and blisters on the gumline. My dentist didn't warn me of all the possibilities...he's just helped me through each new developement. I know it'll all get better ...just don't know HOW log for sure. It's really hard to try to get used to the feeling of wearing something in your mouth.....all the time....I take them out some to rest my mouth....but not for the first 5 days, due to you can still swell way up then not be able to get them back in for maybe several days, but I sometimes when I'm here alone take them out to rinse and clean my mouth and rest my mouth. But I'm still swelled in the gumline, and have to get them back in before the gims inflate a bit, and it hurts to push them back in. I still have sore areas from the extractions when the dentures rub them. I have a bone spur that surfaced on the edge of the gum and my dentist wants to leave it so ai'll have more bone in my gumlines, which you want for support in the future, but it is very red and hurts when it rubs.....do I sound like a horror story? Well, here is my final statement...
Do it if you must, don't care what people say that know -who knows what they'll need to go through one day, You are a very brave and noble human being for joining the service, thank you for that....and once you get it done, do everything they tell you to to heal quick as possible......but maybe allow 6 wks for sure for recovery (before you leave town or anything away from your dentist/surgeon)....not like you need to stay cooped up or not go out. I worked not the next day, but the following day. It sucked cause I was sore with them in my mouth......but I'm taking it a day at a time......TODAY I went sled riding with my boy, and nearly broke my tailbone so the teeth aren't as much of an issue today !!!! Ha...Ha..... If you need any coaching.....you can contact me at
reneharkins555@yahoo.com.
There's items at the drugstore that assist with wearing the denture plates more comfortably...I can tell you what works best and stuff like that if you don't know who to ask when your dentist is out of the office!!!!!!

First and foremost find a dentist that specializes in making dentures. Many are so poorly made and look fake. A good specialist will add details to make them look like natural teeth. Look for a dentist who offers permanent dentures. This is fairly new and a great advance. Hygienically, it is best to remove them at night and soak them in a good denture cleaner. You don't want denture odor, which can be very strong and obvious as to what it is. Besides soaking, they need to be brushed with a denture brush with the cleaner as tarter does build up if they are not taken care of properly. You jaw line could change or you could get creases at the sides of your mouth. Talk to your dentist about changes. A little cosmetic enhancement can fix that. Now, if you are getting the lowers pulled, do everything you can to save as many of those teeth as possible. With regular dentures they don't stay in as well without being anchored to other teeth. Good luck. You will not need denture adhesive if they are made correctly with a good fit to your mouth.
