I'm no longer a mormon, but my entire family is mormon. I am currently a Free Mason/Knights Templar, but i want you to listen to some facts, as you will get alot of wierd answers from people that do not know what they are talking about.
Mormons are Christians. They are not a Cult. In General members of this church "the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" more commonly known as the mormon church or LDS church, are really good, kind, generous, people.
They believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ, the main book they use to teach of Christ is the King James Version of the Bible. They have other books called the Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. These are books written by the mormon prophets since 1838, many of which contain the history of ancient peoples and revelations the mormon prophets have received since the formation of the church in 1838.
Mormons in general are very industrious type people, they work hard in their regular everyday jobs, they work hard on projects within the church wards and stakes. They do alot of charitible work throughout the world.
The Mormons believe that the teachings of Jesus Christ changed so much from the time he was on the earth until the early 18th century that Christs church no longer existed in it's true form. Thus, Joseph Smith claiming to have had a visitation from angels and Jesus Christ re-established the true church of Christ upon the earth with the formation of the LDS church. It is taught that he received golden plates and transcribed from these the "Book of Mormon", the priesthood was restored to the earth via the formation of the Mormon Church.
I have studied many religions in my lifetime. All are different in some respects, but the LDS church has a close semblance of what the priesthood was like during the reign of Jesus Christ. While other religious organizations do not have this.
The priesthood of the Mormon Church has many levels that male members must progress through.
Deacon, Teacher, Priest, Elder, High-Priest. Only Elders and High Priests are eligible to ascend to the high leadership positions in the church.
All Mormons are baptised via submersion in water one has to be age 8 or older to do this.
Mormons believe in buiilding strong families, and if they lead righteous lives, firmly live the teachings of christ can all be sealed to one another in a mormon temple ceremony that will result in all of the family members being in heaven together for eternity.
In the early days of the church it was believed and practiced by many that men could and should have multiple wives. While many thought this was basically done so that the man would have more opportunity for sex and to father more children this was not the purpose of polygamy.
Usually polygamy was practiced when a woman would lose a husband via death or would leave the church entirely. The Prophet of the church Joseph Smith would then assign these widow's or divorced women to another man and he would then be responsible for the support/caring of that woman and her children. However, as people can be very judgemental this was frowned upon by the rest of the world and thus the mormons were persecuted relentlessly for decades. The condoned practice was ordered stopped by the Prophet of the church in the 1890's, as the federal government was going to sieze all church wealth and property if they didn't stop practicing polygamy.
It was a condition that was required for Utah to become a state, which it finally achieved statehood in 1896.
Today the LDS church has more than 12 million active members in the United States. It is growing by more than a million members a year. The church has it's headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah.
You may find more information at www.lds.org
One last thing, while there is a standing order from church leaders that polygamy is not to be practiced by members of the church and if caught doing it members are excommunicated, there are many still practicing polygamy in the church and the church doesn't do anything to those individuals and deny's everything about them, simply because they are wealthy influencial families.
I know this as some of my family members are part of that small segment of the church.

They're followers of the Church of Latter Day Saints. They don't believe in birth control. They are Christian. They keep a lot of food in storage on hand. In general, they're very good folks, but they have some very different ways. Assuming that you're getting involved with one, you probably want to read the book of Mormon.

They are Christians who believe that Jesus appeared to the Native Americans, who were descendants of settlers who immigrated from Israel thousands of years ago.
