Do you have to be drunk a majority of the time to be an alchoholic? I always get confused on what exactly it means to be an alchoholic.

No you don't have to be drunk all the time. To me , my understanding of an alcoholic is someone who uses alcohol to cope with or dull pain, emotional or other often enough that it becomes something you rely on to cope with everything in your life. Happy , sad , good thing , bad thing , after awhile you drink for any reason and its all you care about. You abandon your family, friends ,previous lifestyle anything you have to do to get that drink, it is a terrible way to live. The good news is it doesn't have to be fatal.I know.

being drunk a majority of the time doesn't mean alcoholic, just means an immature usage of your money. If you can not go with out a drink or you crave a drink or you need a drink to sustain yourself or self worth these would be the things that would suggest alcoholism. It could be a phase you or the person this question is intended might be going through. Relax and look at all facts before jumping to conclusions that might not be. if it is effecting more than just the pocket book then I would suggest getting outside help.

Alcoholic means you are addicted to alcohol. Like with any addiction, they may not be drunk all the time, but they have no control over their drinking and will very often drink more than they should. If they are forced to not drink for, say, a week, and they still crave it at the end of the week, then they are an alcoholic.

Former alcoholics who don't drink anymore are still considered "recovering alcoholics"
