it was built on the rock that it is said that Muhammad PUH went from it to heavens. there was no ruins of the temple there.
Caliph Omar did not pray in a church so Muslims in the future can't calim it so he would never build on the ruins of the Temple.
did the ruins of the Temple service a 1000 year?. if yes why is it difficult to find any clue to the existance of the temple in the same place as where the rock is now.

An old legend about Muhammed making his night journey to heaven there. The Caliph Omar built it on the remains of two Jewish temples. Now he can build Haram al-Sharif on the most sacred site in Judaism, something that is somewhat sacred to Christians, but if Israeli archaeologists try to replace a plank and make minor adjustments in the foundation, ON THEIR OWN HOLY SITE, it is wrong. And there is no damage, so what right do West Bank youths have to riot, stone police officers and storm their holy site?!
I don't think I would storm my own holy site so that cops with stun grenades and teargas would come after me. It is not a scene for conflict. People pray in there. Strikes me as hypocritical on the part of protesters (rioters and looters, really).

Did he? You are listening to Israelist who use this story as a pretext to demolish the Dome. How can a person who was one of the Prophet Mohammed’s companions, then leader of the Muslim nation, insult other religions? The Quran ordered us to respect all prophets. By the way, he did not “capture” he went for a visit.
The hate between Israelis & Arabs does not seem to end.

The top of that hill has always been militarily the most defensible position in that area. Jerusalem has always been very difficult to conquer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dome_of_the_rock <-- that's the best that I can find..
there isn't any emphasize on where it was built ..
Great Muslim Caliphs such like Omar were not known to ridicule any religion, therefore it would be wrong to believe that he did so to insult non-Muslims..

I see no evidense Mohammed was ever in Jerusalem
but since Jerusalem is a significant city fo Jews and Christians both, they might have felt necessary to have a presence there
