Gays cannot marry in the USA because President Clinton defined marriage during his presidency as a Legal Union between a Man and a Woman. He did not do that because of any religion, or to make all the homophobic bible thumpers happy... He did it so the IRS would have a legal definition for the purpose of collecting taxes.

I don't believe that you are necessarily a "homophobe" if you don't believe that gays should be allowed to marry. Most of my gay friends would rather have a civil union that is recognized and the rights of their partners upheld in a court of law. The extremists on both sides use the term "marriage" as their rallying cry to push their agenda.

I wonder if gay marriage was legalized would a church be forced to perform a gay marriage ceremony even if it runs against church doctrine? Would they lose tax exempt status if they refused to perform these ceremonies? There are other questions that need to be answered.....

Not a Christian nation? sez who? A recent survey showed that more than 80% of Americans considered themselves Christian. Besides, "legal" doesn't neccessarily have anything to do with religion. But, Marriage was established for the purpose of commitment to procreation and raising the family. Gay marriage is an abberration of that goal.

You're right about some Americans
discriminating homosexuals,it's selfish
and homosexuals should have the right
to marry like everyone else.Some
Americans don't accept others like
God does.Once there is a Democratic
president,like Hillary,things will change
for the better.Some Americans can
be selfish and intolerant bigots, they will
never learn to accept and care about anyone
other than themselves.

As long as you have someone in the White House like Bush then things will not change. Let's hope this next time around will be different.

Bush and other's are so worried about other Countries residents being happy yet here at home they stop two people that love each other from solidifying their unions!

ITS A BURNING BUSH!

To answer this question, follow the money.

Big insurance companies do not want to offer benefits to same sex couples.

Big insurance companies make big donations to politicians.

And the government would rather tax the couple as two individuals.

What does God/the Bible/Morality have to do with this? Nothing. But it sure makes a nice smokescreen.

it all has to to with the government--what the government wants, the government gets. I do not care who gets married to whom, or if they even get married at all, that goes for gays, lesbians, straights, and whatever else I may have missed. I do not believe the government has the right to tell anyone who they can or cannot marry, but since I do not have more money than the government, my vote does not count. Sad, but true, America--the land of the free--free to do whatever the government tells you to do; or else.....

What? That's all I've read on here! lol The religion excuse for not legalizing gay marriage is just that, an excuse. They're just using that book to back up what they're scared of. In reality, it wouldn't affect them but they don't want anyone doing anything.

Same with interracial marriage. Some people claim that's against the bible. It all boils down to hate. The bible or God has nothing to do with it. Yet again it's a group of folks using the God excuse to try to stop any group of people they deem bad of being happy or (God forbid) having the same rights as them.

Considering how lightly some heterosexuals take marriage, I highly doubt legalizing gay marriage would sully the institution of marriage. Not alot of people hold it true anymore.

The people may not be Christian/conservative, but the people in government are.

Also, people in America just have some unexplainable fear of gay people... I don't understand it myself. But, those people outnumber the rational thinkers quite a bit, which is why so many plans to legalize gay marriage get shot down in the elections.

America may not be all Christian all the time, but there are certainly many, many homophobics running around here. I figure the heterosexuals only make it work 50% of the time...why not let somebody else have a try??!!
