What you are PROBABLY seeing most often are weapons qualifications BADGES : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weapons_Qualification_Badge

Those MEDALS with a Cross in the US Military are: Distinguished Flying Cross, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross, and Distinguished Service Cross (DSC)

The Germans of course had the IRON CROSS during World Wars One and Two... and The French had the Croix de Guerre (Cross of War)

It depends what "Cross" you are inquiring. For example, in the US, Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) is the second highest military decoration of the United States Army, awarded for extreme gallantry and risk of life in actual combat with an armed enemy force. Actions which merit the Distinguished Service Cross must be of such a high degree to be above those required for all other U.S. combat decorations but not meeting the criteria for the Medal of Honor. The Distinguished Service Cross is equivalent to the Navy Cross (Navy and Marine Corps) and the Air Force Cross (Air Force).
