Tongues are usually glorifying the person and not God. Hence, most Christian pastors would not permit tongues to be spoken in the church in keeping with the biblical admonition against the speaking of tongues unless there is an interpretation that can be rendered at the time.

Hint: evangelicals do not necessarily believe in speaking in tongues. You are using far too broad of a term.

Try Pentecostal or Charismatic

There are different types of tongues spoken of in the Bible. One type is a prayer language that could be used at anytime.

Evangelicals don't speak in tongues. Pentecostals do.
Hint: Evangelicals are Presbyterians, Evangelicals, Baptists, etc. - none of which believe in speaking in tongues.

For attention? Your guess is as good as mine.

You know, I've watched some Christians speak in tongues and others from across the room interpret, and I know the people next to me were full of crap because they were my friends.

Normal people just walk out shaking their heads. Aye-yie-yie!

you will say "talk in yet another language," in English. you may desire to declare, "talk in yet another tongue," yet that is truly too formal for many circumstances. And "conversing in tongues" is a non secular element between some Protestants, truly interior the U.S., so be certain which you do have the word suitable :-) English is my community language. I additionally talk Spanish, German, French (badly), Hebrew, somewhat bit Dutch, and the undemanding "politeness" words in jap.

Does any one understand these tongues? Any person can make inarticulate sounds- some rockers do- but does it make any sense to anyone other than their delusional minds?
The purpose of language is to formulate thoughts and express them thus communicating with others.

It's amusing that tongues is listed amongst the divine gifts and yet it is the most useless "gift" on the list.

Whom does it help?
