first of all its not short dating. It is just like marriage but with time limit. Only Shia sect allows muta, Although there are some conditions. Anything allowed by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) cannot be forbidden. and this is why Shia allow it. but again it is not a popular practice and marriage is preferred.

Actually Mutta is a form a marriage..it is when a man and a woman agree to be married for a while..either aknown time such as a month or an unknown time but a while such as the time limit of studying abroad..
anyway.. this marriage was not banned in the begining of Islam, but then God sent a revelation to Mohammed and it was converyed as a Hadith banning this marriage till the end of time
But Shiites did not ban it while Sunnies did..
( btw it's prophet Mohammed)
Shiites did not ban it because the person who recited after Mohammed was one the Caliphs that they hated therefore they discarded the Hadith.
It is like legan prostitution.

There was and is no such thing in Islam. The only thing we can find from the history of Islam is that only those were allowed who went to war and stayed quite long time from their home with out their wives. But in general it was and is not allowed in Islam.
Also please keep in mind that its not short dating it was a complete marriage procedure but divorce was given if wife wants when they want to leave that area.
It was also the part of some sect with in Shai Muslim. Also note not all Shia Muslim practice or believe in this mutta. And now no where in the world this in practice.

I know of what it is. For a short time it was allowed, and then the verses for not forcing women to prostitution were revealed along with no premarital sex and the punishments for sex outside of marriage. I have some knowledge of Islam because of friends, and from what I understand, Muta is just prostitution. Prostitution is not allowed and not practiced today. It was something for when the men were at war.
