I tried the same thing. I used Dark and Lovely haircolor products. Burgundy shows up real well. To get a lighter color is much harder. You can try going to a salon for copper color.

I have dyed my hair many times, and I know that red dye is the hardest one to pull off. It doesn't always take well and it doesn't usually last for long, either. Once my hair was black and I tried to die it red. I had to bleach it first in order to make it come out right.
I'm white, but I also know that there are hair dyes made specifically for African American hair. Maybe those would work better on you. I've seen them at beauty supply stores- I'm sure the clerk there could help you pick out something that would work for you.

Well, because your hair is black it has to be lightened first before you use the red hair dye. I would have this done professionally because coloring your hair can cause a lot of damage if its done wrong.

You're really blonde deep down aren't you? ;o)
You need to go visit a professional stylist to color your hair. Sorry.
If you have a black pair of jeans, and want them to be red, do you think dying them red will dye them red? No matter how many times you dye them, they will forever be black. Well, black with a hint of red to them. Black can't be dyed a different color, let alone a lighter color. Whether it be hair, shoes, clothes.....
You need to lighten your hair first. I wouldn't mess around with buying bleach to lighten it, and then dying it yourself. Just treat yourself and go to the salon.

I would try getting it bleached professionally and then dyed professionally. If you get it bleached right, it should wipe out the color and allow your dye to sink in more fully.

upload extra information. what's your organic haircolor ? If its darkish you'll choose a marginally lighter pink to acheive your required seem. i like Hydrience and Excellence for brilliant reds.

That is a difficult colour change to make - perhaps you should get it done professionally.
