American English is more of a watered down bastardization of British English. So many different cultures and other things have shaped American English. So much so that sometimes you might need an interpreter to understand British English. Also, British English is much closer to the "King's English" than the American version can ever hope to be.

Well, aside from the accent differences..all that I know is that the British use more proper sounding words (sometimes referred to as the "King's English") while over here in the states we have a lot of slang and are more laid back.

Hope that helps..if only a little....

American english is laid back, and not so snobby. British spell things differently, and word thing so formally. For example...

Americans spell color like that and brits spell colour. And how words are pronounced are different.
