If your divorce was final on or before the last day of the tax year, then you are not married. You should file as Single, or Head of Household if you have a qualifying dependent.

I agree. The tax year ends on Dec. 31st. If your divorce was final before then, you were single for at least 24 hours in 2006. You can file Single status. Check with your tax preparer about Head of Household. Sometimes, even if you qualify, it's more advantageous to file Single.

Corhanem has the only correct answer so far. TweetyBird is close, but there is no 24 hour requirement – it’s your status as of midnight the night of December 31. And there is no such thing as filing together for part of a year as Allan H suggests.

You file as single, or as head of household if you are eligible to do so.

I think As you are divorced in the middle of the financial year you need to file the tax as a couple for 6 months.
