They must see this freedom, from everyone who surrounds them, from cultural institutions, and from their government.
Those of us who live in America are fortunate compared to some, but America does not yet have full freedom of religious beliefs. What about the freedom to not have any religious beliefs? I see atheists insulted and baited on a regular basis. What about the freedom to follow one's own beliefs without being told that they are wrong? I see Christians condemning the "unbelievers" daily here.
What about the freedom to display one's religious symbol? You can refer to the one question I've asked so far; be sure to read the links. My mother lost her job because of her religious beliefs. She was fired shortly after wearing a pentacle, her religious symbol, to work, and was told by the company that they did not need to disclose the reason they fired her. Her co-workers who kept their jobs wore crosses to work. Because of this she no longer feels free to wear her pentacle in public.

Ask them if they're ever been wrong in their life. I mean about anything. We all have so that's the point. No one has all the answers and no one knows which religion is right.
Some people cannot be convinced that it's ok that others don't believe what they do. That's sad. Those people are just lacking faith in their own belief system. They can't think for themselves and they feel that no one else can either. That's far from true.

You can't please all the people, all of the time.
No matter what the the dominant religion in your area says, or does, (in terms of genuine religious tolerance) there will always be an intolerant minority who want it all their way, to the exclusion of others.
Thankfully, the intolerant minority have places to vent their spleen, such as Right Here.
So you see, Nature restores the Universal Balance, and in doing so, creates harmony, by providing enclaves for the petty, the mean of spirit, and the insecure.

Put them in a religious setting where they're not in the majority. Nothing shuts up a godbot faster than HIS rights being trampled on.
Read this "column" from Wing Nut Daily in 2005:
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=46828
Now if that can only translate into respect for others when they *are* the majority.

Freedom of religious beliefs is a fact of life. It is there whether you believe it or not.

ask them to imagine if they were a religious minority in a country that didn't have said freedom. they wouldn't like being told (by the state or just social pressure) what they could and couldn't do, so they should understand others' similar feelings.

Keep saying "The First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees freedom of, and from, worship." Keep repeating this as the answer to all their questions and statements until they get it, or shut up. If they continue to argue, pack them into a crate and ship them to Iran.

If they live in America and don't realize the freedom we have in every aspect of life, then they are too ignorant to bother with.

It helps a lot if they're already a blank slate.
