2 of my cats dont like water and are short haird so do need bathing the other 2 are longer haired one baths maybe once a mouth the other one loves water and i have to bath her once a week, i use baby shampoo though less chance of drying out her skin.
she dose wash her self but on bath days the water still looks a little dirty and after she smells grate and her hair is less likely to get matted for a while.it also seems to lesson the amount of shed hair i find around the house,
so if your cat likes it and u have the time to do it i think it can only be a good thing,

Cats are very clean by nature. Have you ever noticed how many times a day cats wash them selves? They are the most meticulous creatures on this planet. There is no need to bathe a cat once a week. The only time they really should be bathed is if they have gotten into some thing that could pose a health risk. Or for fleas. Other than that, let your cat clean itself. Besides, cats hate water, they really do. Cats are very hard to handle and control when you try to bathe them. You could get scratched or bitten. Your cat could hurt itself and you in the process. I'd give it a little more thought before you bathe your cat.

What the heck you doing to that poor animal? No cat requires bathing once a week. The cat will bathe itself so leave it alone unless it gets into something smelly or oily. Everytime you bathe the cat I'm sure you are using a shampoo of some sort. The cat then licks this as it tries to dry itself off. Not good when used so frequently. It also dries their skin out just the same as yours. So leave nature alone, you mean well but don't know best.

Its not a good idea to bathe your cat often - they do not need to be bathed except when they get too dirty or smelly that they cannot cope with cleaning themselves. Cats are fadstidious self-cleaners and they can go for months without a shampoo. In the summer, when my cats tend to roll around in the ground a lot, I wipe them down with a moist face towel. When they get too dirty, then I give them a bath in warm tub water. But in the cold weather, I never bathe them even if they get very dirty (which they don't). Really, cats do not need to be bathed often like dogies.

Cats by nature are very clean. A typical cat spends 5 hours a day grooming herself—and 16 sleeping.
Short and medium-haired cats are generally fine with weekly brushing to remove dead hair and redistribute skin oils. Cats with short hair rarely need to be bathed unless they are unusually dirty or unable to clean themselves due to poor health.
Long-haired cats are a different matter. They need to be brushed several times a week or even daily to keep tangles and matting under control. The Persian and Persian-related cats benefit from a daily brush. They also may need to be bathed every month or two to keep the long coat clean. Toenails need trimming every 2 weeks or so.I
If your cat has long hair or gets very dirty, she will need to be bathed – but don’t expect her to like it. Most cats are thoroughly insulted at the prospect of a bath. Some resist vigorously. In fact if your cat is frail, has heart problems, or high blood pressure, check with your veterinarian before heading for the tub.

Once a week is unusual and probably way too much.
99.9% of cats are never bathed and don't need it. Many cats go their whole lives without being bathed because when they lick and groom themselves, that takes care of the "bathing" process. The only time I have bathed cats is if they have a flea problem but that is a one-off unusual circumstance. On the other hand, I brush my cat (using a special pet brush) to get rid of excess fur and any "dirt" about every other day.
If your cat has a special problem with it's fur or skin or fleas, please talk to your vet.

That seems a bit excesive, especially since cats keep themselves so clean. I have difficulty getting my cat in a bathtub so what I do is get a damp towel and rub him with it for about 5 minutes. I would only wash your cat with shampoo once every 2 months. You can still set them in a tub of water to lift as much dirt as possible. Animals have more sensitive skin than humans. Over batheing is worse than underbatheing for your cat.

okay... first lesson about cats: DON'T BATHE THEM!!!
One week is way too much! And if you really really must then just once, but that's only if they've just decided to go wallowing in mud. They clean themselves, that's what is so wonderful about cats... THEY ARE LOW MAINTAINACE! You feed them, brush them and play with them and THAT'S IT! NO BATHS! Is your cat bald by any chance from all the baths you've given it?

that probably to often as its skin will get dry because its natural oils have been washed away. short haired cats dont even really need baths but for long haired cats maybe once a fortnight.

aatriedes - That's rude.
Cats do not have to be bathed Cats are very clean animals. The only time you may need to step in is when you need to give them the occasional "butt bath" from diarrhea.
They do make a dry powder that you can sprinkle on them and brush it in. It makes your cats smell better. You can buy it at walmart and most pet stores. Good luck!
