I very rarely purchase lottery tickets, since the most that I have ever won is $5. There is a great joke on playing the lottery.
A guy kept praying to win the lottery. Week after week went buy without winning anything. He finally asked why he wasnt winning and God replied, you have to buy a ticket first....
I am like that guy, wonder why I dont win, when I dont buy tickets!!

I do buy them and I spend about ten dollars a week, but that's only when the pot gets really big. I used to buy them more often about 3 years ago. I won a little, but lost more than I won. So sad. :o( To answer your last question on numbers I do both, my own and quick picks.

I don't like the lottery because I kinda feel like its for dumb people that don't realize they're getting ripped off. But to be honest I can understand it as a lil entertainment. Its fun knowing you could win so much money.
You can improve your odds of getting lots of money by picking higher numbers.
Many people pick birthdate numbers 1-30 and stuff like that that are low numbers. So if you win with low #s you are likely to split the pot with several people... if you win with high #s you are more likely to have it all for yourself ;)

Depends how much it is. When its over 100 mil I buy a few tickets. I let the machine pick because I would kick myself if it second guessed a number.

I spend $520.00 / year. It is my only vice, I quit smoking, drinking, my wife is passed on and I have no girlfriends. I have won maybe a total of $20.00. I let the computer pick my numbers. I may have a couple of minor vices, I cuss some and pick my nose. LOL

i won 350 dollars on pic 3 last night yahooooooo and it was a quick pick i spent 5 dollars on the ticket
