I am 19 and just had a baby, but I want to go to college. I've heard about programs where the government will give grants and financial aid to single mom's for education. I have been searching the web for hours trying to find stuff, but I can't find anything. Can someone help please?

go to the college and talk to the financial aid office; you are just as eligible as anyone else for financial aid. they have resources you don't even know about yet and can advise you, all free services.

the programs you mean are probably part of welfare-to-work; you will have to contact the welfare office, I guess.

regardless of how you manage to fund your education, managing your living expenses while you go to school is what is most difficult. many colleges have daycare on campus now, this would be very helpful. you may have to move in with family or take a roommate to help meet expenses while in school.

where there is a will (and a dream), there IS a way.

Loans and scholarships.

First, fill out a FAFSA. It's free and they will tell you how much money you can get in grants, subsidised loans, and unsubsidised loans. You can fill it out online or you can print a copy and mail it. Be sure to save the PIN they give you- you will need it later.

Second, apply for scholarships. Ask at your school's scholarship and financial aid office what scholarships are available to students and apply for all the ones you qualify for.

Also, check out scholarship website, like FastWeb, where you can fill out a profile of yourself and the website will search for any scholarships that you might be eligible for based on your profile information.

Lastly, if child care is a problem for you, find out if your school has a day care program for students' kids.

Edit: www.fafsa.com is not the real FAFSA website. It is not affiliated with the Dept of Education. That website charges money to file and track your application for you and you don't need to do that. Go to the government's site that I listed. That is the legitimate and free one. Never pay anyone money to help you find money for college- it is almost always a scam.

Check out Federal Student Aid Web Site or FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

I suggest you explore all federal funding and grant options at the Federal Student Aid website http://federalstudentaid.ed.gov/

You may also want to read the Handbook of the Pell Grant -- this is an 86 page document that contains everything about the grant
http://ifap.ed.gov/sfahandbooks/attachments/0203Vo3MasterFile.pdf

Or you can call the Federal Student Aid Information Center http://www.ed.gov/programs/fpg/gtepfpg.pdf at 1-800-433-3243 and ask them if there are any programs for you

Aside from FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov and Pell Grant http://www.ed.gov/programs/fpg/index.html , you may want to explore private foundation grants

Also check out Fastweb http://www.fastweb.com

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) and their opening blurb says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." You may be able to find grants from private foundations.

hopefully you want to attend a school with a good financial aid office. They should be able to tell you right away what opportunities are available to you and what programs you qualify for. They should also be able to provide you with a list of scholarships that you could qualify for and be usable at that school. also, you should sign up at www.fafsa.gov Don't limit yourself to a financial aid search for single moms either. There are tons of scholarships for women in general that you could qualify for. Good luck

Dear you ,
Have you considered getting a part time job , working full time on the weekends and things like that?
Secondly , The Internet is not the good government we have , the Internet is nothing but a private business. And the freebies do not provide you with what your looking for , they only get you hooked to the web and you end up spending money on garbage.
Go to a Welfare office and ask them about the specific programs you are telling us about , they will let you know who to call and where to go. Also , don't forget to look in your Government blue pages , take your time , follow the links and take your pick , call one of them , let our tax dollars advise or guide you , plus that's what it's for , it's their "pleasure and job to assist you"
Besides , what do you have to lose . 1888 , 1800 etc; and local numbers are free to call anytime.
Good Luck our friend.
Sami

Yes, fill out a FAFSA (www.fafsa.us) form to apply for aid. Usually if you are under 24 you have to have a guardian's income listed, but since you have a child that makes you independent so you can file on your own.

Also try www.fastweb.com. It's a great site that lists many scholarships that you can apply for! And also try www.scholarships.com, (although I haven't personally used that one.) I wish you the best!
