If you want to get closer to God then go where He is. Serving people is one way. Some people think that by becoming a christian God will bless everything they do, but if you truely want to draw closer to God then do His will. Read the bible daily, pray, and help out at church are a couple of things you could do. look around and see where God is at work in the community around you, then help.

It's great that you are praying to get closer to him because our relationship with him is always dependent on him. Since God desires to have a close relationship with you he will respond to your prayer. Four key ways to develop a closer relationship with God are prayer, getting to know your Bible well, spending time with other Christians and serving others.

"Ask and you shall receive!" First, you don't want the answer to be to fast because it takes time to build a framework of imagination to handle the answer.
Jesus taught that God can be a personal God because we actually do not need an intermediator. I sometimes wonder about that, but a also feel that it is a great idea. The point is, it is your faith that knows. It is your spiritual imagination that can envision God.
So work on developing your Spiritual Imagination! If you want a dialogue with God, you have to learn the language, but you well if you seek to. It has a lot to do with perspective, yours and Gods and everyone elses.

The bible says that it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. Of course some preachers were sent and some just got up and went, but a preacher after God's own heart will feed you manna from above. You will know he's a man of God because you'll feel like you're being fed spiritually while he's preaching and won't be left feeling hungry when he's done.

Read the Bible daily if possible. Some ppl find the ones in modern English easier to read than the King James Version (which is good, but the old English is sometimes harder to read). You might find inspiration by going to church and Sunday School. Sunday school isn't just for kids, they have classes for adults too and you can ask questions there (where as in a sermon, ppl normally don't interrupt the pastor). You might also join a Bible study group in church too (not required, but asking questions and studying the Bible in an organized way can help you understand it better).

Stay close to God with all the honesty you can have, the closer you will find yourself to God. For He delights to be close to a person like you.

Praising and Worshiping Him will help you to get into His Presence.

Get rid of sin, bitterness, pride, envy, etc.

Be willing to do His Will, no matter what, and trust Him. Pray and read the Bible regularly.

Be aware that God is there when you are praying, and be sensitive to whatever He may show you.

Praise and worship.

I close my curtains, put on my music and worship God.

Psa 22:3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.

God comes to dwell in your praises.
