How can you tell a male parakeet from a female? Do you sex them the same way you do baby chickens?

You were given one, almost complete, correct answer! =)

The cere (yep, it's that fleshy bit around your birdie's nostrils!) is a purpleish to blueish hue in males, and a pinkish to brown tone in females.

However!!! You can't properly sex the 'keet until they are 6 months - 1 year old. They all have a very pale pink/white/beige cere until they've matured!!!

it is very easy to determine whether you have a boy or a girl. The color of the cere (the little bit of skin right on top of their beak) is blue in males, and brownish to pinkish in females.
