NO. You can understand what is being said with turrets, but tongues ... well, that's gibberish.

Turrets is a disease.
Speaking in tongues is by the Holy Spirit. (While some people may seem as if they were speaking in tongues or had turrets, because of being demon possessed)

no. I have Tourettes Syndrome and take it from me, it is nothing like that.

Tourettes is involuntary by definition, however, speaking in tounges in not involuntary at all. It is only when you open yourself to the possiblility of receiving this gift from God does speaking in tongues occurr. You are basically speaking you own words when God interferes and alters your own voluntary words into another language that you normally would not know.

Tourettes is speaking aloud words of distress. The words themself are nothing more than an emphasis or attack on vocal sounds in order to releave mental stress. The words spoken by someone with tourettes is like another person hitting a wall when they are angry. A person with tourettes feels a build up of stress in his nerves without any true reason for why it is occurring. Therefore, to release this mental stress he would have to release it in a mental (verbal) manner because a physicall release would have no effect. Its not the same kind of stress. And then the verbal release is like a reflex rather than a decision. This is why its impossible to control. Just simply as impossible as you trying to fail a reflex test by a doctor who his tapping your knee. Try not to kick. Only by holding your breath and tensing up your leg can you slow it down but you will still kick.

I can see why you think they are the same thing. But I am not speaking in a foriegn language when tourettes acts up. And I most certainly do not see it as a gift.

P.S. To the person who posted just above me... I am in Kentucky!

NO not at all. Turrets syndrome is an involuntary reflex and looks demonic. A genuine gift of "tongues" used by a normal healthy person without neurotic tendencies is beautiful and peaceful and is a language of the angels. Singing in tongues is a very healing music.

Turrets Syndrome does manifest itself sometimes with the outburst of uncontrollable vulgar language, but there are also tics. But I can see why you ask this question. In Biblical times, did people suffer from Turrets? Where they immediately persecuted by the church? We're always quick to judge that which we don't understand. Thanks for the food for thought.

Sure, if speaking in tongues means you cuss everyone out.

You really don't know what that phrase means if you believe that people will start speaking in cryptic languages. It just means that the message of the Bible will transcend cultures and languages; Christians will convey the message to people even if they don't speak the same language. It doesn't mean that some hillbilly in Kentucky will start speaking in ancient Greek, or Arameic, or something. There's no voodoo or hoodoo involved. It's just a misinterpretation of the concept.

No. Sometimes Turrets can be just a sudden explosion of temper for no reason.
