There are many things that lead up to my becoming an atheist.

First of all, Satan didn't "blind" me.

Second, I could believe anything in any book that was written long ago. There is a difference between "belief" and "fact." Anyone can believe anything they want to believe. I could believe that nature is fooling us all about what color things are because I see grass as purple and the sky is orange. Just because I "believe" that doesn't make it a fact.

Third, the bible was written by men about things they couldn't prove either. I do think something horrible happened in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Was it a rain of fire and brimstone sent by god? I don't think so. I do believe there was a freak storm that caused rain horrible lightning and thunder and the people who lived back then felt God was mad at them... heck, we see that now-adays as well. Was the entire earth flooded and a man gathered up 2 of every animal on the earth to put in a boat he built? Physically and logistically impossible. To make the "god destroyed the world with water" story plausible to future generations, they HAD to have some way for the animals to survive or the story fails. Hence, a big flood and an ambitious man who built a boat to save his livestock.

Fourth, the god depicted in the bible is a mean and vindictive egomaniacal dictator who demands total devotion by his "creations" here on earth AND THEN for all eternity once you get to heaven. Here on earth, we don't care much for people like that... why should I accep that from a supreme being?

You cannot use the bible to prove the existence of god. And in a book with that many words, something is bound to hit the wall and stick occasionally. There are more things in the bible that are objectionable than are acceptable... it's just convenient when theists pull out something and say it came true.

And further, just because it's in a book doesn't make it true. I love Harry Potter... Do I believe there's a school for witchcraft and wizardry somewhere in the world, a school where they teach kids how to apparate between planes of reality and levitate pencils? Nope... it's fantasy, much like the bible. Harry Potter is filled with great smaller stories of bravery and patience, daring and understanding, as is the bible. And both are filled with bloodshed. Just because we know it's written by someone who is living now and claims authorship makes us say Harry Potter is not real. But what about a few thousand years from now? Will someone out there think Harry Potter is a true story from this time period? It's always possible, isn't it.

Bible = nice book with interesting stories, but is not fact

I'm more of a fence straddler, leaning towards atheism. When I was 10 and I got "saved" the world was very black and white and the existence of God was very clear. But now I'm 25 and I have distanced myself from religion. Did I have a fit of rage one night and decide to stop believing? Certainly not. It developed over the years with discussions with other people and by myself.

I'm kind of tired right now, but hHere are a few of my points:
-- If God is the ultimate creator, then he is the mastermind of the concept of evil, right? Seems like a pretty cruel invention to me. Why not skip the whole Earth thing and let's just hang out in heaven.

But.......
Some interpret the book of Job describing "evil" as an uncontrollable force that God is contending with and he had nothing to do with the creation. Well, if that's true, then how is he going to keep this promise of eternal life in heaven. What's to stop another angel like Lucifer from "falling from grace" and starting a whole new good vs. evil power struggle.

-- People in the Biblical days got to witness miracles such as a guy dying and coming back to life 3 days later(Jesus) and the parting of the Red Sea. However, we of the present have to believe in miracles such as "Oh he was in a horrible car crash but he made a full recovery! It's a blessing from God!" Seems pretty unfair to me, but the good old Book says that ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL. Well, those guys that got to witness the Red Sea parting seem a little bit more lucky than me because I have never seen a so called "miracle" like that. Show me one and I will believe, though.

-- Heaven has streets of gold? That just seems a little pretentious.

-- Why do I have to pay for Adam and Eve's screwup? That just seems ridiculous to me. Punish them but don't punish the descendants.

I'm starting to fall asleep at the keys, but anyway that's a little bit of what I think.

1) Complete lack of evidence.
2) The fact that prayer doesn't work.
3) The fact that many concepts in the Bible are illogical (like eternal paradise or eternal suffering).
4) The fact that it's been two millennia and Jesus has not returned.
5) The absurdity of many of the things in the Bible.
6) Contradictions in the Bible.
7) The existence of thousands of other religions.

The complete lack of empirical evidence? Long, hard thought? Personal experiences? An untrustworthy holy book that if taken literally defies many scientific facts and sometimes contradicts itself? The hypocrisies committed by the church and members of it? Realizing how an after life and many of the concepts and ideals set forth by the Bible make little or no sense? A desire to rebel against the conventions of society and be unique?

I'm more a Deist myself, but I can see how someone would be an atheist.

Why dont you (shawna t) believe that Zeus is real?
Why dont you (shawna t) believe that the Flying Spaghetti Monster is real?
Why dont you (shawna t) believe that the Invisible Pink Unicorn is real?

How about Gollum? Yoda? Spider-Man?

He's not my creator, he's a fictional character.
If you take any myth/story book the length of the bible and compare it against thousands of years of history, you'll find similarities as long as it's vague enough. so what?

Which creator?

Odin or Zeus? Or maybe you're thinking of Allah, or Mithras, or maybe its the Three Pure Ones? Like the flying spaghetti monster, there's no evidence that any of them exist. Yahweh is rationalization better understood by a psychologist than a mathematician.

God is definitely real...the Bible is definitely not. The Bible is a flawed, man-made work of fiction and fantasy mixed in with some verifiable facts of history. Please cite the current events that are alleged to be prophesied in the Bible.

(1) The Bible is incoherent and self-contradictory. Hell, I could find "fulfilled prophecies" in the phone book if I looked hard enough.

(2) Your concept of God is incoherent and self-contradictory. Omniscience: if God knows the future, how am I free? My freedom is a damn sight more obvious to me than your God.
Omnipotence: why doesn't God prevent horrendous evils? Is He "testing" us? Was he "testing" the little children at Auschwitz? Or maybe their "sin" got them gassed and incinerated?

Theres nothing wrong with being an atheist, most are rational human beings who only want scientific evidence of God's existence. They are not the problem, the problem would be people who say they believe but are not very good.
