I wore braces in highschool for less than a year but overtime spaces grew between my fangs and the tooth next to them...also I have big gums they are embarrassing, I can't even close my mouth properly due to the fact that they are so big and I have an overbite...Can my gum size be reduced, from the top of my gums to the bottom of my top row of teeth are over 3/4 of an inch long, I have been told I have big gums like a rabbit...and as far as closing my mouth my chin is all bunched up b/c I can't close my mouth properly...I have been told that I look like I'm mad and that I hold my mouth like I still have my braces...even though I'm 24 my eyes water up on this subject, I've always been teased about it and cover my mouth when I laugh...what can I do...I've been told your pretty but your mouth looks weird...When I talk to people I look them in the eye and can see their eyes shift down every couple seconds to my teeth...what can I do??? There has to be somethingout there...

I'm surprised this one idea may not have been brought up when you were in high school, wearing braces. Please make an appt. with an oral surgeon-a really good one. Maybe you can have corrective jaw surgery-your mouuth will be wired shut for up to 8 weeks-liquid diet-but it will be worth it. When I was in high school, back in the 70's my orthodontist referred me to an oral surgeon, and he did jaw surgery on me. My lower jaw had grown out too far, and then the second surgery was because the right side started to grow back out. So, when I had it done the second time, I had gum tissue showing when I smiled, and they took the upper jaw up and back just a little-wow! What a big difference! Oh yes, for insurance purposes, plus reality, this type of surgery is not done for cosmetic reasons. It is done to improve your bite, and dental care, both now, and in the future. Plus, there are now so many advances in this type of surgery--and you will feel so much better after it's all done! Please check with either your dentist, or another one in your area for the name(s) of a couple of oral surgeons. I wish you the best. Take care.

I think you can do something about this, look up cosmetic dentistry and plastic surgery. Dentists and Plastic surgeons have come a long way. Dont go to your regular dentist for this, that will just frustrate you, look on line for the best. Look up the Swan, that tv show, and check out the dentists that were on there. You know what though, this is probably a bigger deal to you than it is to other people, when anyone talks to people there eyes shift down towards the others mouth. Maybe your insurance can cover some of this since you say you cant even close your mouth. If you have to look into taking out a loan in order to pay for the work you need, but do not take no for an answer get multiple opinions on what can be done.

There is a surgery that can reduce gum size. An orthodontist can assist you with the treatment you seek but their is no easy answer. Smile proud!
