He is trying to establish himself as dominant to your husband.
Obedience training by the husband will make the dog behave.

Your dog could just be afraid of men. My German Shepherd was like that, he was beaten and abused by a man and hated all men. After some hard work, he's loves men.

You need to tell your husband to be quiet around the dog, make sure he is sitting when the dog is in the room, tell him not to look at the dog. Also, provide your husband with plenty of treats he can give the dog if the dog comes up to him.
Once the dog is tolerant of your husband (allow at least a week for this) in the room, tell your husband to stand up slowly.
Keep moving forward, slowly, over a time span of a few weeks and I'm sure you're dog will become accepting of him.

It is a feed-back loop. Something which he did must have triggered that response and now your husband too may be radiating ill-will toward the dog. Dogs are extremely sensitive to our vibrations. Still here is a possible solution.

Buy some Holly (Bach Flower Essence) and put a few drops of it in water and spray the same in air next time when you visit. You can even rub a little Holly (it is put in brandy so a little alcoholic smell may be there, which will wear off) on both your dog and your husband (if he agrees).

I hope you will write to me whether this works or not.

The dog is viewing your husband as a rival for dominance. The only way to get the dog to stop this aggressive behavior is for your husband to unquestionably show the dog that he is the dominant one of the two, and that such behavior will not be tolerated. NO HITTING, NO YELLING. Anywhere your husband goes that the dog goes too, your husband goes first. If the dog displays any aggressive or excited behaviors (barking, begging, pestering) immediately take the dog somewhere else and isolate it until it's calm, then return it to it's normal surroundings. You can also try laying down a mat or rug and having the dog lay down or sit on the rug calmly, giving a treat for calm behavior, and taking the dog off to isolation for barking or showing aggressive behavior when presented with your husband. Short side, your husband has to communicate in dog-language that he's the boss.

Dogs are funny that way. It's hard to say why, there are so many reasons i.e. jealousy, territory, alpha dog... I love this question because it reminds me of an old dog of mine, before he passed on, if my husband extended his hand towards me (we held hands alot) squeeky would go nuts, my husband had to run to the bedroom and shut the door behind him to get him to calm down, my poor husband, he was such a good sport. Squeeky did eventually stop doing that.

some dogs just bond closer to one person over another. if the dog has taken a liking to you than it will naturally have a problem with your husband. it has to now compete for you attention. also some dogs just favor one gender over another. to try and fix the problem i would let your husband take it on walks more often and ESPECIALLY let him feed the dog. they will never bite the hand that feeds. treats are also good incsentive to stay on ur husbands good side.

Why is YOUR dog not with you? Obviously there is a problem.

To get the dog use to you AND your husband, the dog needs to be with you and not "your family."

Besides, anyone who is not willing to have THEIR dog live with them , is not a real dog person in the first place.

I don't know, but we have a similar situation with one of our chihuahuas. We got her when she was a yr old, and she has never been friendly with my husband. We figured a man had abused her before we adopted her. The only time she has even been in his lap on her own was the day after he came home from the hospital after having stomach surgery for cancer. He hd been gone 10 days and she had missed him. She got up on his lap and laid her head over on his chest and sat that way about 10 minutes. She has never done anything like it before or after. She doesn't try to bite him, she just cannot make herself trust him.

My wife brought home a dog that became over time, very territorial and protective over my daughter. He nipped at one of her friends and eventually it bit me. We got rid of him the next day. That dog would be great for an older lady staying by herself with no other pets but not for a family situation.
