usually they take out a section of the thyroid with surgery. I had a good friend that had this done. They took a little too much and now my friend has the same as me, a low functioning thyroid. this is easy to fix with with pig thyroid to make up the difference (levoxyl or synthroid are the drug names)

I have heard that a medication called Armour is supposed to be like a natural type treatment. There's also something called Naturothroid. As far as I am aware not too many conventional medicine drs will do this but it couldn't hurt to ask. Do you all live in an area where there are naturopaths that might be able to help with this situation? Which thyroid problem does she have: hyperthyroid or hypothyroid?

Problem is that thyroid hormone has wide reaching functions and can cause major health problems if not properly regulated. I suggest go the "modern medicine" route on this one. Make sure your wife has the correct diagnosis made by a proper workup, ideally by an endocrinologist. Many times there is a dramatic improvement in quality of life when thyroid problems are properly treated.

Be careful with most of the answers that recommended different forms of thyroid for the problem! You asked remedy for hyper-thyroid and they thought it is hypothyroid and recommended the thyroxine supplement. Eltroxin also is thyroxine only. If she takes thyroxin, her condition will worsen and she may be in danger of heart failure! So be careful.
Let me confirm that your wife has hyperthyroid condition: She has good appetite but is losing weight, her pulse rate is high, she can't stand heat and she will have fine tremors in her hands when she puts them out. Her Iodine uptake test will be high (most of iodine is taken up by thyroid). Her T3 and T4 may be high normal or beyond the range and her TSH will be low. She may have diffuse goitre (swelling of neck portion) and may also have bulging eyes (pop eyes) - called exophtalmic goitre.
If the above picture matches her symptoms, the approach is either medical (Neomercazole or similar medicines), subtotal thyroidectomy (removal of a major portion of thyroid) and administration of I 131, radioactive iodine. The second and third options may make her hypothyroid later on and she will then need Eltroxin, Synthroid, Armor Thyroid etc.
Homeopathy has medicines for hyperthyroidism, if you want. I am not aware of other systems of medicine which can help. And sorry but I don't agree with what one person wrote about it being unscientific. Highly biased and unscientific thinking.
Most of hyperthyroid problems have been reported in women and are due to emotional trauma. Treatment of that underlying cause may help resolve her problem, but if you delay, her heart may get damaged. So, be careful.

be smart,y our dr will probably prescribe synthroid, it will regulate the problem, be too high or too low, this tiny pill works wonders and ya only have to take 1 time a day. should tell ya you can go into a thyroid crisis and you could suffer multiple orgaan shut down, including the heart. thyroid also regulates your weight and hair and skin problems, been there, done that. good luck

I have Thyroid problems and your wife should be careful on how she treats this problem, and you also.
Overactive thyroid
Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which an overactive thyroid gland is producing an excessive amount of thyroid hormones that circulate in the blood. Thyrotoxicosis is a toxic condition that is caused by an excess of thyroid hormones from any cause. Thyrotoxicosis can be caused by an excessive intake of thyroid hormone or by overproduction of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland. Having an overactive thyroid gland is associated with an increased risk for atrial fibrillation.
Subclinical hyperthyroidism as a decreased serum TSH in the presence of normal serum FT4 and FT3.

Atrial Fibrillation by Ray Sahelian, M.D. (index of natural medicine topics)
Atrial fibrillation is a condition in which the heart's upper chambers quiver instead of beating regularly. This arrhythmia increases the risk of stroke, heart failure, cognitive impairment and death. Many people do not experience heart palpitations, shortness of breath or other symptoms that would bring the condition to the attention of a health care provider. Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained arrhythmia in adults. It is a significant public health problem in the United States where it affects more than 12 million Americans and almost 10% of the population older than 80 years. It should be emphasized that the prevalence of atrial fibrillation increases with advancing age and with worsening cardiac function. Atrial fibrillation is an independent risk factor for death and greatly increases the risk for embolic stroke. In addition, this arrhythmia can be associated with hemodynamic instability, tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy, and systemic embolism.
Despite advances in the management of atrial fibrillation over the past two decades, the prognosis of patients newly diagnosed with atrial fibrillation - both in terms of heart failure development and survival if heart failure develops - has not improved.
See heart arrhythmia for a full discussion and natural options.
Nutrients that may play a role in Atrial Fibrillation
Fish oils
Magnesium
Vitamin C
Vitamin C and Atrial Fibrillation
Oral vitamin C cuts the risk of early recurrence of atrial fibrillation after patients undergo electrical cardioversion. Vitamin C reduces the low-level inflammation that accompanies this condition. Early atrial fibrillation recurrence after cardioversion may be due to electrophysiological changes in the chambers of the heart. To investigate whether vitamin C reduces atrial fibrillation recurrence, a research team randomized 44 patients who had undergone cardioversion for persistent atrial fibrillation to standard therapy plus oral vitamin C or standard treatment only. Patients given the vitamin received a 2-gram loading dose 12 hours before cardioversion and 500 mg twice daily for the next 7 days. One (4 percent) of the patients given vitamin C had a relapse of atrial fibrillation, while eight (36 percent) of patients not given the vitamin did. The researchers also found that white blood cell levels and fibrinogen levels fell significantly in the group given vitamin C, but did not drop in the control patients. Markers of inflammation were also significantly higher among patients who had a recurrence of atrial fibrillation, compared with those who did not. You need to clarify what you mean by traditional. If you mean natural, then you can find a lot of information on the Internet. An examplke is NativeRemedies.com. I do not recommend homeopathy, as it is based on a faulty belief system (see homeowatch.org)
