A kilocalorie is a unit of energy - it's 1 food calorie, or 1,000 energy calories. It's the energy necessary to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water by 1° Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit).

A calorie is a single unit of energy, while a kilocalorie is 1000 calories. However, on food labels, calorie often stands for kilocalorie. In other words, if a food is labeled as having "100 calories", it truly has 100000 units of energy.
