I've known a lot of correctional officers in my life and I wouldn't say that they really have the same psychological makeup as criminals. For the most part, they are uneducated people who are trying to get the best job that they can with what they have to offer. I think it's possible that in time they are able to think like criminals because they spend a lot of time trying to foresee problems from inmates.

As a correctional officer, let me first THANK the brother police officer (The Go To Guy) for his response. The person posing the question probably does not know that we are also charged with upholding the law. This is done not in the diluted general population of society, but in a place where 100% of the population has already proven not to be able to follow the law. I am a christian with a family, children, and do not feel the need to follow the inmates in breaking the law. It would be like asking an inmate to watch over another inmate. Following the same logic, does the person asking the question think themselves a nerd, geek, or other social reject just because some book worms act nerdy. There are good and bad in all fields. Please remember this the next your sister makes a stereotypical remark. Speaking of cajones, I would like to see your sister control 120 inmates without violence or incident for 12 hours by herself, as I do on a daily basis.

As a former CO in the Indiana DOC, your sister is way off. If she spent much time around offenders she would know this. We are not of the same psychological makeup any more than she is. Its like any public service, you only hear about the bad officers, all the good ones dont make the news!

Well you sister is a good one to talk. She has criminal in her description! Come down from her ivory tower and work around prisoners for awhile, oh what? She doesn't want to do that, she just wants to spout in front of college students, oh, OK.
Just wanted to be sure we were all on the same page here. She couldn't hold a candle to most correctional officers because they do an impossibly tough job for very little pay.
I was a street cop and admired the perseverance for the corrections officers to go and put up with what they do daily.
For some person with no clue to demean them is beyond sad, it's embarassing. Guess people like her are the academicians who said that the Earth was still flat for years...
