To survive. Our bodies, and minds need rest. Mental rest ends in a flood of activity called REM sleep and dreaming. This may be a form of locking information into the brain. Some people have chemical imbalances that allow for little, or no sleep.

Just like eating, sleep is necessary for survival.

Sleep gives your body a rest and allows it to prepare for the next day. It's like giving your body a mini-vacation. Sleep also gives your brain a chance to sort things out. Scientists aren't exactly sure what kinds of organizing your brain does while you sleep, but they think that sleep may be the time when the brain sorts and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems.

The amount of sleep a person needs depends a lot on his or her age. Babies sleep a lot - about 14 to 15 hours a day! But many older people only need about 7 or 8 hours of sleep each night. Most kids between the ages of 5 and 12 years old are somewhere in between, needing 10 to 11 hours of sleep. Some kids might need more and some need less. It depends on the kid.

Skipping one night's sleep makes a person cranky and clumsy. After missing two nights of sleep, a person will have problems thinking and doing things; his or her brain and body can't do their normal tasks nearly as well. After five nights without sleep, a person will hallucinate (this means seeing things that aren't actually there). Eventually, it becomes impossible for the brain to give its directions to the rest of the body without sleep - the brain needs to spend time in bed and catch its ZZZs!

Another theory holds that sleep may serve to protect animals, by taking them out of circulation during the dangerous hours when predators roam. Yet this theory, Dr. Rechtschaffen and others point out, cannot explain why the sleep winks lost one night are made up the next or why the impact of long-term sleep deprivation is so severe.
Dr. Hobson; Dr. Robert Stickgold, also of Harvard; and other experts have argued that REM sleep helps consolidate memory and advance learning, and a number of studies have examined this premise, including two reports published in the journal Nature last month.
The most promising theory so far, some experts believe, proposes that REM sleep plays a role in brain development. Newborns spend more time in REM than adults. Animals that spend long periods in REM are also more immature at birth.

In the meantime, the search continues. The answer, experts say, may turn out to be something obvious or something not yet dreamed of.

"There is something tremendous out there," Dr. Rechtschaffen said, "and we just haven't found it."

Nothing to do with body rest, you can do that while awake

Your mind needs to clean itself out, like defragmenting your computer. During the day your thoughts and memories get scatteres all over and they need to be put somwhere to store. That's why you dream, it's you brain sorting through your memories in no real order.

That's also why people don't think right when their tired.

We sleep because we are tired and need to recharge our batteries. Right now it's late and I'm tired so I'm off to bed. Have a good night.

There are so many reasons why people need sleep...too many to list here, really.

Sleeping allows your body to repair itself, and it also allows your body to 'reset"...also, if you're the creative type, dreams can be beneficial to you
