When I was in my 20's, I drove several 8 hour trips alone- I drove from the east coast in PA to CA, three times, actually.
The main thing is to stay alert and avoid getting overly tired. An 8 hour trip should be easy for that....I would recommend stopping at least once every two hours....
get out and stretch, get something to drink or eat, use the restroom etc. Frequent stops only add up to an extra hour or so on a total trip, and they will pay off in the long run because they keep you from getting road fatigued and sleepy.
Make sure when you stop, you go to well lit areas, where there are people around. DO NOT go to rest areas alone at that hour of the night-
do you HAVE to leave at 1am? Because i would avoid driving that late if at all possible...if anything would happen from a flat tire to anything, it's always better to travel in the daytime.
But, if you have to, just try to remain alert, get a lot of sleep and water beforehand, and keep a cell phone handy. Keep your radio on, and keep the car cool rather than really warm to keep yourself awake.
I'm sure you will be fine- just stay alert, drive the speed limit, stop often, and most importantly, have fun!!! :)

I keep my three year old occupied by playing games like I spy, ask them what do they see, or pick a color and count how many cars do they see in that color. My kids ask me to help them sing the color songs just pick a color and make up a song when that wears them down then maybe put a good movie on for them see that way you can rotate the DVD player. When you take a bathroom break you can let them run a little bit, it always tire them down, try not to give them too much sugar, the less sugar they have, the less energy they will have. So the rest of the trip they should be resting peacefully.

Well, first off make sure you have enough sleep b/4 starting, start looking for service stations when the gas Gage gets to half full, keep water and a warm beverage handy, make sure the proper dispensing fluid for the windshield installed, and make sure to stop long enough to relax for 15/20 minutes every 3hrs at least, and do not offer/give a ride to any stranger or partial friend,do not stop to help along the hwy to rescue anyone-flag down a trooper or sheriff when seen and tell them the approximate mile marker,

I've done 8 hour trips by myself. I just bring plenty of CDs and plan on stopping half way through the trip for a quick rest (potty, snack, drink, gas maybe).
