this is not an answer to which is better, that is a decision you would need to make based on some study and talking with those who have these types of breeds. Black hound is a breed, very similar to the black and tan coonhound but with different build and coat, also know as the Slovakian hound or black forest hound. I am posting a couple of web sites that may help about the black hound and you can ask a lot of breeders and people about German shepherds. I thought I had a name of a breeder on black hounds but shame on me as i now can not find it.

What is a black hound? I am not familiar with that breed. German Shepherd Dogs are excellent companions, great watchdogs, usually will not bark unneccesarily, and are very easily trained if they come from a good bloodline. I have had a couple of hounds. They are good for finding lost items or puppies, but they bay and bark alot. I guess it depends what you want the dog for.

Well I have a German Sheperd and I think that it is better to have a german sheperd because if train it the right way you will have your self a good dog. But its all realy up to you you will have to decide wich is better for your life style one to fit in your daily schedule.

The only reason I'm responding to your question is the fact you spelled "shepherd" right. We have a white shepherd in the house and she is an important family member, excellent companion and watchdog. We also have several bluetick coonhounds outside and they are totally different than our shepherd. They are bred to hunt, train them to a scent, and that's what they will hunt for. I have never heard of a black hound. There is no better, it all depends on what you want.

There is no such thing as a "black hound".
The German Shepherd is very intelligent and protective.
Hounds tend to do what their nose tells them to do. If a hound finds a scent he likes, don't expect him to listen to a word you say.

do you mean coon hound or Shepard they are so far apart temperament wise. I have almost always done rescue an brought home shelter dogs. But if I was going to buy one of those breeds it would, hands down be a shepard.
